Ring of Kerry

Michele, we will be in Killarney for 3 days. I thought we would skip the "Ring of Kerry tour" It seems like alot of driving for a day especially with kids.

However on some of the maps I've seen there seems to be a road that cuts down the middle from Killarney to Waterville. I was wondering if this was a doable way to drive and then follow the Ring of Kerry road from there threw Kenmare to Killarney?

If so do you know how long it takes approx. to Waterville? Is this a scenic drive? Is it a shorter drive?

Thanks
Mary Ellen

Re: Ring of Kerry

Hi Mary Ellen,

It has been a few years since I have taken that road but it is very small and confusing. Most of the way there are no signs and you will be lost meandering around in the center of the Iveragh Peninsula. It definitely is not quicker! If you want to drive out to Waterville, take the main road and the same route back. The kids will enjoy Staigue Fort and perhaps the grounds at Derrynane National Park. If the tide is low you can walk across the sands to Abbey Island. It will probably take around 2 1/2 hours or more to get from Killarney to Waterville. Of course your stops will add more time.

hmmmm, a road that meanders around with no signs, is confusing and narrow. Michele, I believe that you are trying to egg me on.

Ring of Kerry

Thanks Michele. Without kids I would think that road was an adventure. Maybe some day.

Little Roads

Hi Bill,

:rollin I am still laughing! Yes, you will love that road. Have you explored around Caragh Lake? It's lovely in there and more little roads to get lost on. You have given me an idea for a new book: Scary Little Roads in Ireland. As Mary Ellen says the road is an adventure.

Re: Little Roads

I would love to consult on that book. I haven't been to Caragh Lake. That sounds like a must.
