Drives to Rival Slea Head in Northern Ireland?

Hello Michele,

Last year, I really loved doing the Slea Head drive and was wowed by the scenery. Do you have any recommendations for drives along the Antrim Coast to rival Slea Head?

Thanks a bunch.

Hi Andrea,

In my opinion Slea Head drive is incomparable. However, the whole Antrim Coast is very scenic too taking in Dunluce Castle, the Giant's Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge and Kinbane Castle. Torr Road between Ballycastle and Cushendun is very dramatic and perhaps what you are looking for.

Torr Road

Thanks for the suggestion, Michele. Is Torr Road in good condition? How long would it take to leisurely drive it?

Hi Andrea:

Torr Rd is in excellent condition but narrow. It has a stripe down the middle to mark the lanes, but that's really just a bad joke. It doesn't get a lot of traffic, so it is as safe as any other silly back road in Ireland. Depending on how often you stop to admire the wonderful views, fugure, a couple of hours will get you to Ballycastle. You can take a couple of the side roads which will provide some wonderful scenery also.

If you make it to Donegal, I found the ride out to Fanad Head to be beautiful. Consider that as an option also.

Antrim Coast

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the info as well as for your suggestion. I'll have to look into the possibility of visiting Fanad Head. Do you have a preferred town to base yourself along the Antrim Coast region? I can't decide where to stay. Bushmills, Ballycastle, Cushendall, etc.

Bushmills

Hi Andrea,

I like Bushmills. It is a small village and makes a good base. The Giant's Causeway is nearby. There is a wonderful B&B there called Craig Park that has great hosts. Another good drive in Donegal is the Inishowen Peninsula. You can hardly go wrong with doing any peninsula in Ireland. ;) If you don't yet have my book, it might be of help to you. It describes many different drives along with sightseeing, food & drink, and accommodations.

Bushmills

Hi Michele,
Thanks for the suggestion of Craig Park. It looks like it meets my needs and is the right price. I will definitely see if they have availablity once I know my dates.

Re: Antrim Coast

I stayed in Cushendun at a place where the owner had just won the AA hostess of the year award. Sadly, the rooms didn't look out on the water, but the view from the dining room was oustanding. here is a link to my day there.
