If you decline CDW and charge your car on a gold or platinum MasterCard, your card will cover you for insurance. However, you must get the approval of your car rental company in advance. See this page for all the details of what is covered and what is not: www.mastercard.com/cardho...rance.html

CDW We were so nerveous to wave the CDW too - they make it seem SO important. But we used the platinum MC and had the OK from Dooley's. We didn't have any trouble but some people we met said they had to pay for two hubcaps(easy to lose them on those tight left turns)

CDW Please note that it seems to be standard that if you decline cdw, your credit card will first go to your car insurance policy to collect and only pays what your policy won't. Therefore, depending upon your policy, you could find your insurance premiums hiked, since they'll have to pay up. I would double check with your credit card (I've read the fine print for my mastercard gold and platinum cards and what I have stated applies to them) and with your insurance company. I chose to go with super cdw so I wouldn't have to worry about anything, no deductible, etc. If you just get the regular cdw, you will be liable for the deductible, which will have a range depending upon the category of vehicle. Of course, and luckily too, I experienced no troubles while in beautiful Ireland.
My AT&T Universal Platinum MC covers up to $50,000 of damages w/no deductible. So I should be ok. Thanks again.

CDW Just remember that mastercard does not cover wheels and hubcaps

Re: CDW My understanding is that most US insurnace companies don't cover anything overseas. I know State Farm doesn't. Thus, it's unlikely that they would have to pay.

Good Point Good point, Bill. I'm going to check with my policy out of curiousity.
