Re: Castle Hotels

Hi Jake,

Most of the castle hotels in Ireland are exclusive and quite expensive, however there are some that you might find affordable. Here is a list of many along with prices:

CASTLE HOTELS IN IRELAND

(rates in euros for 2002)

Ashford Castle (Co. Mayo) 194-466 per room
Ballyseede (Co. Kerry) 90-130
Barberstown Castle (Co. Kildare) 86-127
Belleek Castle (Co. Mayo) 53.77-99.86
Bellingham Castle Hotel (Co. Louth) 50.80-57.15
Cabra Castle (Co. Cavan) 58-102
Carrigeen Castle Gaol (Co. Tipperary) 30.00
Clontarf Castle Hotel (Co. Dublin) 130.00
Cregg Castle (Co. Galway) 60+
Dromoland Castle (Co. Clare) 194-469 per room
Glin Castle (Co. Limerick) 242- 381 per room
Kilkea Castle (Co. Kildare) 90-140
Killaghy Castle (Co. Tipperary) 31-44
Kinnity Castle (Co. Offaly) 120-165
Markree Castle (Co. Sligo) 92-157.50
Waterford Castle (Co. Waterford) 180-420 per room

You can access most of these castles online at: www.beourguest.ie/ & www.irelands-blue-book.ie

I hope you find one that is just right for you.

Happy travels,

Michele

Child-friendly Castles

Hi Jake,

If you look at the web sites of the castle hotels most will mention if they are child-friendly. It also will depend on their ages. Some of my clients stayed at Killaghy Castle with their small children and were delighted with it, their hosts and the price. Generally the more expensive the castle the less child-friendly it will be.

Thanks

Hi Darren,

Thanks for keeping me on my toes. I have added it to my list. Are you still in Chicago? When do you return to Belfast?

Michele ;)

Cabra Castle

We stayed at Cabra Castle last April and really enjoyed the overnight. The refurbished stable rooms out back are luxurious, spacious and gorgeous! The views of the gardens from our little front window were lovely. My 13 year ld and I had a great last night in Ireland in their cozy pub. Oscar, the castle Irish Wolfhound, was a huge welcoming doll!
The only negative was the restaurant staff: not at all friendly and very unresponsive to the most simple request ie: more bread.
I'd return again.

Re: Cabra Castle

Hi Diane,

Thanks for the feedback on Cabra Castle. It sounds like it was almost perfect. Was the restaurant staff Irish or from other countries? Lately I have found that many restaurants are staffed by foreigners rather than native Irish and have to agree that service standards have declined. Sometimes they speak almost no English. Must be the new EU rules. Ah, for the good old days when service was Irish and impeccable. ;)

Markree Castle

I stayed at Markree Castle for one night right before Easter. We actually had a group of 17 staying there and we enjoyed it very much. Our group was pretty much the only guests there and had the small bar area as our own. It was kid friendly[we had 7 with us] and the staff was more then happy to help with the picture taking. The castle is still family owned and could really use some "sprucing up" but we are very happy we got our castle experience. The grounds were very nice to walk around and there is horse back riding available...I would definitely go back!

Hello

Yep, still in Chicago. Flying home on November 28, which means we miss the long weekend in the US. That was very sly of them...

Re: Hello

Hi Darren,

Very sly indeed. They could at least have let you stay for the holiday! Well you will miss the lovely Chicago winter anyway.

Kinnitty vs. Waterford Castle

Anyone stayed at either/both of these castles? We are planning one night at one of these places and can't decide which! We got great rates at both since we're going in December. Waterford is about twice as much as Kinnitty, but the Waterford price includes dinner which I believe is quite an experience.

We're in turmoil! Which one should we stay at? We'll be in Kerry prior to the night in the castle and will be going on to Dublin afterwards.

Thanks!
Amy

Waterford!

Hi Amy,

I would stay at Waterford Castle, which is a fairytale place on its own island. Just my opinion. Enjoy dinner

Waterford

I second the nomination for Waterford Castle. We stayed there last year and it was fabulous. It is on the way from Kerry to Dublin.

 Castles

Having stayed at both Waterford Castle and Kilkea Castle, I would vote for Waterford. It's not just a pricey hotel in a castle shell.

Re: Castles

I just have to pipe in here.

You have very good chances of meeting some celebrities at Dromoland or Ashford, VERY good chances.
