Beaches in Ireland

Are the beaches in Ireland in late July and Summer warm enough to swim in without a wet suit? I see pictures on the different travel sites with the guys in their funny speedos on the beaches and wonder if they are really going to go swimming. I was there in June and the temperature and general climate at that time was the same as here in Anchorage, Alaska. Nice, but definitely not hot.

I know about the Blue Flag beaches. I just need to know whether or not to pack that bikini:\

Hi Irene,

As someone who was raised in Miami I would never consider the ocean in Ireland warm enough to swim in. But that is my opinion. Since you are from Alaska, perhaps you might take a dip. But unless you get a real hot spell over there you probably won't need your bikini (unless you are staying at hotels with swimming pools). But perhaps this site will better answer all your questions: www.met.ie/marine/marineclimatology.asp

Re: Beaches in Ireland

yes, I had that site bookmarked but for sailing information. I'd noticed that the average temps were only in the 60s or 70s in August, which is why I thought that the beach pictures looked strange.

It is *because* I live in Alaska that I don't like being cold:rollin Not to mention the fact that I was born in Cuba and wanting to be warm is in my blood.

I'm going to say that it's a sage bet that I'll be leaving that bikini at home...

Thanks

Hi Irene,

Cuba was practically in the neighborhood in Miami! If they do get a heat wave in Ireland you can always buy a bathing suit. Now that would be a unique experience. I wonder if they have any Aran knit bikinis? :rollin I actually saw people swimming last September. They were screaming as they jumped into the ocean and didn't stay in very long despite the glorious day. I just enjoyed a walk.

Beaches

We were in Ireland in the summer of 95 during a spell of weather in the 90's. (We have SO lucked out with our weather on all of our trips!)

Anyway, my teenagers, who didn't know ocean temps can get warmer than the waters of Cape Cod, couldn't be convinced to go in the water. A bikini won't take up much space in your suitcase, though, so take it along!
