Drive fron Kenmare to Dingle Town

Hello forumites
I have a question about a planned drive fom Kenmare to Dingle Town. I hope to get an early start, and drive around the Ring of Kerry clockwise staying on N70 then getting on R561 east out of Castlemaine through Inch then on to Dingle. Is this a good route, and is it doable in a day? All comments and suggestion welcomed

Hi Bluecrab (cool name)
First, on your post I think you meant R561 West (not East) thru Inch.
It can probably be done. How many times you'll want to take pictures. Are you going to miss Ladys View toward Killarney????
Then you'll pass Agadoe Heights and Gap of Dunloe.
Plus what time of year will you go. Daylight is limted after Oct. Just some of my comments.

Hi Bluecrab,

As Gary said, it probably depends on time of year. The Ring of Kerry will take most of the day so I would suggest an early start. There are things to see and do along the way and the going is slow and very scenic in many places.

Thanks to you and Gary. I will be going on this trip in mid June. I was concerned that it was to long of a drive to make it in one day (B&B wants check in by 6:00 pm). I know there is a lot to see and don't want to get stressed out worrying that I'll be late!

I've done what you are suggesting twice and it can be done with a reasonably early start. I tend to stop and take pictures a lot also. Last year, we avoided most of the buses by driving out to Valentia Island. We stopped just over the bridge, had a picnic lunch, then headed along the outer shore, caught the ferry on the other end of the island (it takes about 3 minutes to cross) and headed to Dingle. The road on the north coast is generally wider than on the south coast.

valentia/skelligs

Bill,
I'm curious if you have any pictures of the Valentia area showing the places where the Monks of the 1200 century were staying. I missed it during travels around the Ring last trip.
also, I've heard that Skelligs Island was a secondary place where the Monks chose to really try to reach the heavens with the 600+ steps to the Beehive huts they had constructed. Very amazing.
Is it be open to the public for viewing via ferry service.

Hi Gary,

There is no regular ferry service to Skellig Michael. You must arrange a visit with the local boatmen. Any visit is dependent on the weather. You should plan on spending a night in the area and start out early in the morning. These are some links for you:

You both have great input on the subject. I was wondering, I tried to look up Valentia and found the name Valencia on a map. Why the 2 different spellings?
Also about how long would you say the Skellig Ring drive will take if I use the ferry to get back to the N70 Ring of Kerry road.TKS

Hi Michele,
Thanks for the links. Almost like being their.
Now I realize the memorial we had seen, showing the boat on stilts with 4 monks in it, on the side of the road N70.
The photos show the waters quite frisky.
