Doolin Ferry

We will be in Doolin in June and are planning to take the ferry to the Aran Islands. I read in one of my guidebooks that the ferry docks were closed as of the writing (published in 2004). I can't find any more substantiation of that online, but I was wondering if anyone knows for sure if we'll be able to take the ferry from Doolin. It makes a difference in our planning, of course. Thanks! Rhonda

Re: Doolin Ferry

I had the same question a few weeks ago. I called around including the Doolin Ferry company. They are very upset with the LP guide for the misinformation and were going to contact them about it.

The ferry will begin operation for the season in April. There is no problem with the port and the ferry will run as scheduled.

Apparently the story is that Doolin had claimed Adverse Possession of the land where the dock sits and wants to build a big dock for their ferry and not let anyone else use it. The locals were a bit upset and there has been some court action to block any construction.

But that doesn't affect current operations and both the ferry company and the Board Failte of Ireland have confirmed that the Doolin port IS NOT condemmed.

In fact, if you look a few pages before (or maybe it was after) the guides says to take the ferry at Doolin. It was apparently an editing problem.

Hope that helps.

Irene

Hi Rhonda,

Irene is absolutely correct. Doolin Ferries is not closed. I'm glad you could get the correct info here. See this web site for more: www.doolinferries.com
