Derry or Belfast?

Hi Michele and happy new year!

I'm starting to think about my next trip to Ireland, hopefully it will be in June, and on my agenda for sure will be parts of Northern Ireland, in addition to the northwest of the Republic. I think I want to pick either Belfast or (London)Derry, but don't know if I want to do both. Do you have a favorite between the two? By the way, isn't it supposed to be officially Derry now instead of Londonderry? I keep seeing it called Londonderry in various references.

Hi Ande,

You are certainly starting 2004 off right by planning another trip to Ireland! What a difficult choice. How about tossing a coin? Derry is closer to the Republic's northwest but I think Belfast may have a slight edge. I'm sure Darren would agree with me...but then again, maybe not . Most people now call it Derry though it was called Londonderry for ages due to English influence. So it started thousands of years ago as Derry and has now come full circle. Whatever you call it, people will know what you mean.

I couldn't possibly agree with that.

If you have time, do both - Derry's only a 2 hour bus ride from Belfast after all. Or 3 hours by train (logical, eh?).

And as for Derry/Londonderry, you'll find that Protestants (formally) would say Londonderry, whereas Catholics (formally) would call it Derry. However, nobody except lunatics worries very much, so just call it Derry and you'll be fine. Or do a Bill Clinton and call it "Derry in the County of Londonderry"

Half Way Between the Two

My husband and I stayed in Portballintrae, which was right near Bushmills, in May 2003. We loved the area, and Portrush wasn't too far away either. The B&B we stayed at had wonderful views of the North Sea. It was called The Manor House (www.portballintrae.com/).

I'd be intrigued if it had views of the North Sea, bearing in mind that the North Sea is to the east of England.
