RE: Third Trip to Ireland!

Dan,

You are in the countdown! I haven't heard of O'Brien Coach Tours. You will have to fill us in on them. Millstreet is closer to Killarney than to Cork. Your friends could have taken tours from there also. I will let Bob fill you in with bus options.

Michele

Dan --  Hope this helps.

I know that I have seen O'Brien Coaches on the road, but have NO info, per se ...

I found a website:  http://corkcoachhire.com/index.htm   Is this them?  Not much info or details available ...  confuse confuse confuse

I would think your friends would be better off opting for dealing with Deros Tours out of Killarney, though.  Most of what they are interested in seeing is in THAT direction ANYWAY -- and, Killarney is much closer, and more convenient than Cork City ... biggrin biggrin

I've taken their Gap of Dunloe Tour (and highly recommend it, IF THE WEATHER IS GOOD!!!! biggrin biggrin

We at Dero's Tours offer the perfect itinerary for today's discerning traveller. For over half a century this family-run business has provided an excellence in service that both tradition and time has honoured.

Bob,

Many thanks! This looks like the most comprehensive and best organized websight on geneology of all I have looked at so far. It appears that our 1 & 3/4 days of sightseeing in Dublin will need to be supplemented with an additional day trip from Millstreet (by train probably) back to Dublin to spend time in a couple of locations there, before we do any ground work in County Cork.  I believe you have done a train trip from Millstreet to Dublin, right? If so, about how long does it take, what time would you suggest leaving, and what time would we expect to get back, based on your experience. I will start looking at the train schedule websight  that you posted above. I always wanted to ride a modern day passenger train anyway so this will be another 1st!

Dan --

I've done two day-trips to Dublin by train.  biggrin

FUN!  Each way takes about 3 hours.

Don't forget that you MUST Pre-Apply for a Reader Card in order to perform research in the National Archives!!!!  The Document that I provided the link to ALSO has the address and phone number for the Heritage Center in Mallow.  That MAY be all you need, though they told me that the Pre- 1900 documents weren't digitized and that I had to see THEM in Cork City  confuse confuse confuse.

If you want to MAXIMIZE your Dublin time, go In/Out of Mallow as they 'Cut Off' Millstreet earlier in the evening.  The only drawback to THAT would be that you would have to drive back to Buckley's from Mallow in the dark.

The Mallow train station is on the LEFT (North) side of the N72, just immediately BEFORE it intersects with the N20 (Limerick to Cork Road), as you are approaching Mallow, coming FROM Millstreet.  smile

On the Irish Rail website, they offer 'Web Only' Specials that are MUCH cheaper than the Standard Fares.  Only Caveat is that they MUST be purchased ONLINE (Though you can do so as LATE as the night before!) -----  and they are only for 'Off Peak' travel.

Basically, all that means that you can't leave before 8 AM and you can't return on the 5 PM .....confuse confuse confuse confuse

And exactly HOW that is that some Great Sacrifice ??????????  biggrin  biggrin  biggrin  biggrin

The Library in Millstreet (Next to the Car Park that is opposite St. Patrick's Catholic Church) has two computers that provide Internet Access.  There's SUPPOSED to be a small fee ( a couple Euro) to use them, but they have never actually charged me ... confuse

Also in the same building, is the Museum.  It is PROBABLY where Sean Radley will suggest that you meet ... biggrin

My Irish Mobile number is 087 949 2207.  If you are still around Millstreet on the morning of Friday, 1 April, give me a call and perhaps we can meet with Sean Radley, together.

I really DON'T mind sharing ...  biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin

By-the-by, Dan.  Didn't answer your earlier question.

We're meeting with Sean, partly 'cause it the polite thing to do, while in town and partly to introduce him to two more siblings and partly to present a gift to the Museum of a small 'Tourist Market' Irish Doll that was actually manufactured IN Millstreet, some years ago.

Found it on EBAY (thanks to it being mentioned on the Millstreet website -- and managed to be the Highest Bidder!  biggrin  biggrin

I offered it to Sean for the Museum, as the old Factory ( which once employed quite a few locals) is now Out Of Business and no one actually though to "Collect" a sample.

We're donating it in my Father-in-Law's name, as he would have EXPECTED nothing less!  hmm  hmm  hmm

Won't be doing any Research in Millstreet -- this trip -- Though I DO have some digging to do, down in Macroom.  Millstreet is strictly a BRIEF Social Call (and to show the siblings a FEW of the sights!), interim to our two MAIN objectives -- Macroom and a visit with The Cousins in East Cork.

Hoping to find the ACTUAL graveyard where my wife's Great-Grandfather was buried, in August of 1902!

Bob,

It sounds like you are going back to about the  same era of our kin folk, in your search for your wife's great grandfather's grave. I am the 5th generation out from KNOWN relatives out of Ireland, and our Grandaughter is the 7th generation.

Our goal is to try to go 1 more generation back in search of records and possible graves. Another goal is to try to locate some distant cousins still living  there, but as you know, Murphys are a dime a dozen in Ireland so it is a daunting task.confuse   No great expectations, but we're sure going to have fun trying! And if not successful.....there will be another time!biggrin

Speaking of geneaology... Has anyone used the Irish Archives Resource to do genealogical research? http://www.iar.ie/

I was looking at the site just in general terms, as it contains many databases that could be used as resources for various types of research, and I became curious.

Okay, I feel a little silly about that last post. I just saw that same link posted in a different thread. But I am still interested in hearing what people have done or tried to do on the site and how they found it...

Kate --

I tried one or two quick searches, but didn't come up with anything.

It MAY be that there are NO records for the individual that I searched for ... cry cry

Haven't really played with it that much, yet, though.

Kate,
LIkewise, I tried but couldn't come up with anything for any ancestors either on that websight.

Bob,

About pre-applying for the reader card for the National Archives.... I looked thru your links, and I couldn't seem to locate any information about how to apply for it. Could you give me that exact websight information again please? Maybe the couputer gremlins are out! Is this pre-application process something I should do via the internet before we go, or can we do it after arriving in Dublin? If so my time is running short and need to get it done soon. Thanks.

Thanks Bob!

I have printed off 2 applications....I assume my Wife and I will both need one. If I read it correctly, you apply for the ticket at your first visit and it is good for 3 years. One more thing to put in the travel folder.
