Waterford and Carrick-on-Suir

Just 12 more days before I head to Ireland :) I'll be spending time in Waterford and Carrick-on-Suir.

Does anyone have suggestions for off-the-beaten-path things they "discovered" in the area? I'll be driving, so suggestions can be both in town and in the area. Recommendations on restaurants and shops are welcome too.

Thanks,

Corey

Re: Waterford and Carrick-on-Suir

Corey,

I know you are counting down the days. You will have the list of the usuals like Waterford Crystal, Waterford Treasures Museum, etc. so I will try to add some alternatives:

Dunmore East (thatched houses, a lighthouse, cliffs, beaches)
Tramore (beaches)
Copper Coast Drive
Curraghmore House and Gardens
Hook Peninsula & Hook Head Lighthouse
Dunbrody Ship: New Ross
Kilmore Quay: cute town with lots of thatched houses, a lightship museum & boats to the Saltee Islands (birdwatching)
Mahon Falls in the Comeragh Mountains (there is a "magic road" there but it failed to work its magic on me
Dungarvan: beach
Ardmore: round tower, crosses, ruins, walks
Vee Drive (Lismore to Cahir)
Lismore Castle Gardens
R700 scenic drive from New Ross to Thomastown
Inistioge: Mount Sandford Walk & Woodstock Estate
Graiguenamanagh: Duiske Abbey and nice town
Dunbrody Abbey
Tintern Abbey
Youghal (nice town) Ahern's for food
Ahenny: high crosses
Fethard: lots of antiquities around
Ormonde Castle

For shoppingin Waterford you might enjoy:

Woolcraft
Joseph Knox
The Book Center
Penrose Crystal

Waterford Restaurants:

Bodega
Dwyer's

Have fun. We will be looking forward to your trip report.

Michele - You've given me a goldmine of suggestions. Thank you.

eliteshooter - I will think of you any time I see a Brendan Tour group! (Glad to see you bought Michele's Book...based on your posts, I think you'll find the amount of detail she provides about packing, arriving and general Ireland travel advice quite useful). Have a great trip!

Corey,

You're welcome. Glad to offer suggestions. However, you will probably need a few more trips to see it all!

Re: Waterford and Carrick-on-Suir

Fortunately, I've already seen a few of the things on the list...as for having to plan another trip, aw shucks! :)

I'll be sure to post my trip report...we're definitely due for some fresh reports to be posted. I suppose we need to give our June travelers a little time to recover from their trips.

Corey,

Yes, we could use a few more trip reports. Unfortunately, not all the people who get advice here remember to come back and post after their trip. I guess it's a "been there, done that" kind of a thing. Either that or they get too busy and forget.

Today's the Day

Todays the big day. My travels begin at noon. Should be a great time...two weeks with family and friends along with some touring.

I'll be sure to give a full report upon my return.
