father's crazy

My father announce today that he wants to go to Ireland in the fall but he wants to drive this time - not take a tour. I am sick, he can barely drive over here! He even said if they wouldn;t rent him a car (since he's over 75) then he will have my mother rent it and he will drive. We would go but we are recovering from our trip to England in March....what can i tell him to convince him not to do it. He said he's driven it about 10 years ago so he thinks he can do it now - YIKES!
Some people we met in Ireland last time had a hired driver - does anyone know of a company or person and about how much is it??

Re: father's crazy

stannseniors,

That is scary! :eek First tell him that if your mother rents a car and he drives it and does get in an accident it will totally void all insurance bought from the car company or the free insurance from MasterCard. He would be liable for the dammage up to the total cost of the car. And cars in Ireland cost much, much more than here in the States. After he digests that info, renting a chauffeur-driven car will seem inexpensive.

Ideally, renting a chauffeured car is best for more than two people because then the price can be shared with others. It is obviously more expensive than renting and driving yourself. As with car rentals themselves, rates vary by company. A good Google search will turn up many chauffeur companies in Ireland. Also give 1 2 Travel a try as they will shop their entire list of companies and get back to you with the most economical.

Perhaps you could suggest putting off the trip till you can accompany them.

Keep us up to date on what is happening. I wish you success in reasoning with him (or your mother). Try to enlist her help.

Michele
