6 hour Dublin layover

Just learned that a friend will be flying from the States to his new assignment in Rome in a couple of weeks and has a 6-hour layover in Dublin. He wondered if there were anything he could see/do in such a short (but long) time period, or if he was doomed to hang out at the airport the whole time.

I'm waiting to hear back from him about Dublin arrival/departure times and date of travel, but am guessing that it will be a fairly early morning arrival (almost all flights from US are).

I was thinking he might have time to do a single destination --- maybe just Trinity College area or just Christchurch area (he's a priest and I'm speculating on his interests).

Or maybe he would do better to avoid downtown Dublin and go to Howth gardens or maybe even Malahide?

My personal preference, if it's do-able, would be bus to Glasnevin, maybe have a nice Irish breakfast and visit the cemetery there.

At any rate, any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. If you do think he could get out for a very short visit, tips on getting bus and/or transportation info would also help.

Maggie,

First let me tell you that there have been long delays getting through security at Dublin Airport. Your friend should check with his airline, but generally a three hour advance check-in is suggested now. That would leave him with three hours maximum to get to and from the airport and for any sightseeing.

Since you are not certain what his interests are I suggest that he take a look at this website: www.visitdublin.com He can look at the various sightseeing available and then make his decision.

Thanks! I alerted Father Tim to the possible airport problem, so he will check with his airline. At least he won't have any luggage and the same airline will eventually take him to Rome.

I told him there was a Ireland Tourist Board office right in the arrivals concourse that could help him with bus info, etc., and then gave him printed info to look over about Glasnevin Cemetery and Malahide (both the town and the castle/manor house). If he decides to leave the airport, I suggested he try one or the other of these sites (since it's at least a half-hour trip each way to downtown Dublin).

He's pretty unflappable, however. He declared he would escape the airport for a little while even if all he had time to do was ride around on a bus.

Will let you know if he was successful!

Maggie,

If he goes into the city center he can take the hop-on hop-off bus around Dublin. It takes about 1 1/2 hours for the complete tour. Then if he has any time left he can get off where he wants. Just another option. The tourist office in the airport will be of great help.
