1 week tour

We will be taking a 1 week tour of Ireland the first week in November. We will be staying in 5 different B&B's and hotels. My question is, being a woman what would you carry every day? A backpack, fannypack,or what? I'm not a purse carrier but need to think about camera, money, maybe taking clothes off or putting them on because I don't know what the weather will be and the suitcases will not be readily available. Any input on how to pack to live out of the suitcases everyday would be appreciated, too. My husband and I are only taking one carry on each. Not checking any bags.

Re: 1 week tour

kbk54923,

Many tour companies give you a small carry-on to take on the bus and stow your incidentals in. Check with yours to see if they do.

I personally have a couple of plastic-coated canvas tote bags (they fold flat for packing) that are invaluable in Ireland. Something like that would be perfect for a camera, jacket, wallet, book, etc. I got mine at Harrod's and Belleek but I'm sure you can find some in regular department stores if you look.

backpack

I'm not a purse carrier either, so I have quite a colletion of backpacks (even a couple of really nice leather ones that look more like a purse). I found a small daypack was just the right size for the camera, guide book, pen, notebook, chocolate bars,fold-up rain slicker, and had a place for a water bottle on the outside.I also had a wallet-type thing that could be worn on the waist like a belt where I kept cash for small purchases, but I kept bank, credit cards, passport, and the rest of my money in a money belt. Always. The nice thing about a backpack is you always have both hands free, and these days backpack come in many different designs and colours and sizes. Don't get one that's going to mark you as a tourist, or one that's going to look like there might be an expensive camera inside.

Re: backpack

Anita,

Thanks for your suggestions. Everyone has their own preferences. And what is right for one person is not right for all. It sounds like you have it down to a science!

tote

I have found that a backpack purse is the best way to go for me. When it's a really busy, well populated area i can throw it over one shoulder and hold it on the front of me or even put it on both shoulders backwards so it's on the front of me altogether. it looks a little silly but when we were in London it was almost shoulder to shoulder some places and someone could have taken my purse. The best part is when you are hiking around in Ireland you can throw it on your shoulders like a backpack but it's smaller and has room for your wallet, your camera, a notebook etc.
