Single woman traveling

Hi Kristen,
I'm doing the same thing in just a few weeks. From all reports, it's perfectly safe as long as you use good common sense like you would at home.

Happy journey!
Jo

Just like home

I spent three weeks travelling alone in Ireland and didn't have any problems. Just don't do anything you wouldn't do at home. How are you travelling? Renting a car or going by bus or train?

Well I'm A horror with direction even at home sooo I thought it best to do a tour company. But you do have free days so there will be times I'll be wondering about alone. Thanks for your reply it's good to know.

Me too...

I also have a terrible sense of direction, even in a place I know, so I was a little apprehensive about travelling alone. In the end, the only places I really got lost was in Dublin and Belfast. All other Irish towns are quite small. You can do what I did, and just base yourself out of one place for a few days then pick some day trips to do from there. There are lots of companies offering day trips. You can see pretty much all the sights by doing this. Try reading my trip reports in the I'm Back section before deciding. It takes a little more organiziation on your part before you leave, but in the end you are more likely to have the trip you want. I found that the tour companies often only go to some of the places I want to go, and they charge quite a surcharge for single travellers.

Re: Just like home

I appreciate the advice but its a little more than my bad direction. I'm very recently divorced after 13 years and frankly to travel to another country by myself is quite scary in itself but Ireland is a place I've dreamed of going for many years and I've got to do it! This first trip (I'd like to make many more)I feel I need the support offered by a tour place. I havn't booked yet because I'm trying to find out if the place I'm booking with is reputable. But after this first one is under my belt I'd definetly consider going on my own. Thanks

Re: trip to ireland

Kristen,

You have received excellent advice so far from the other community members here. They are absolutely right that Ireland is safe for women traveling alone who use common sense. For instance you don't want to go pub-hopping alone at midnight in Temple Bar.

I can understand wanting to get an overview of the country by taking a tour for the first time, especially given your circumstances. I highly recommend CIE Tours. They are consistently rated one of the best tour companies in the world. If you click through to 1 2 Travel from the bottom of this page: www.irelandyes.com/author.html you will find that they have a 5% discount on CIE tours right now. Check and see if they have what you want.

Let me know if I can help in any other way.

Michele

Kristen,

Make friends on the tour and go pub crawling with them! ;) There is safety in numbers.

Weather Page

Kristen,

If you live in Florida, California or Hawaii you might think it is cold in November in Ireland. If you are accustomed to the changing seasons then you will most likely consider it to be cool.

Go to my Weather Page and you will find a temperature chart with average temps for the year.
