One Night in October

Hi Michele & All
Our 3 week trip in October is almost completely booked. Arriving Shannon Sept 20 and driving to Killaloe for 4 nights. Drive to Killala in North Mayo for a week of Self-catering ( thanks Bit and Michele) then to Roundstone for more self-catering in Connemara. Our last 2 nights will be in Ennis at the Temple Gate Hotel.
There is one unbooked night, Oct 8, between Roundstone and Ennis. We are looking for a village setting, doesn't have to be too exciting or attraction filled, just in the general neighbourhood. We're considering Cong (The Ashford is out of our league), has anyone stayed at Ryan's? I know Gleeson's in Roscommon is recommended and it does look like our kind of place. Any other suggestions?

Stewart

Stewart,

I've not stayed at Ryan's in Cong. It looks nice on the website. Do they have off-street parking? Another place that comes to mind is Oughterard. But I think there is more to see and do in Cong: Cong Abbey, Cong Woods, Ashford Castle & grounds, boat tour on Lough Corrib, walking tour of town.

Stew,

Gleeson's is owned by friends of mine but I fell in love with their establishment long before the friendship bloomed. Roscommon is mor of a small town than a village. Roscommon Castle is within walking distance of Gleeson's as is the Abbey ruins.

Have you considered Athenry? It is a fabulous heritage town. I usually stay at McDonagh's which is just on its edge. Their four-legged ambassadors will steal your heart.

Slan beo,

Bit

Ennis would be a reasonable choice with all the usual requirements available in town and easy access to the M18. If you do get stuck call up above Lough Derg we don't use the caravan now we are in the cottage so visitors are always welcome, provided they don't mind a little less than the very best.

Tony,

Stewart will be in Killaloe at the beginning of his trip and Ennis at the end. He is looking to fill one day between Roundstone and Ennis. I think Cong would be a nice night's stay.

That is a very kind offer from you. Maybe you can meet up when Stewart is in Killaloe. biggrin

Thanks Michele, I agree that Cong would be a good spot for the night and Ryan's looks OK. I must admit though that I am leaning toward Gleeson's in Roscommon, Thanks Bit. I will contact them to get a better sense of the differences between 'Budget, Standard, and Superior.

We are still open for suggestions from anyone. Birr, an old favourite always comes to mind.

Tony, thanks for the generous offer. We spent a week in Killaloe last year and will be spending our first 4 nights there in September. The area has become a favourite. We will again spend our last 2 nights in Ennis. As Michele says maybe we could get together while we're in Clare. It's a long time until September, we'll be in touch

Stewh,

Let me see if I can help you out with the rooms:

budget rooms: smaller and toward the back of the townhouse, usually with a double bed and the bathroom has a shower and toilet

standard rooms: are larger, over the mid portion of the townhouse, have a double bed and a shower

superior rooms: king bed, bath/shower, trouser press

executive suite: sitting area, king bed and a hydrotherapy bath with a town centre view

I have always been satisfied with my standard room.

If ya stay in Roscommon town, make sure you wander across the square and have a dram at Doorly's.  biggrin

Slan Beo,

Bit
