April 1Dublin and Galway

Visiting my daughter at UCD in Dublin. Will stay on the Green in a B&B for three days enjoying the city, museums  and of course the pub crawls. Renting a car on the fourth day and driving to a B&B in Galway. Plan on exploring the city(it will be a sunday) and then driving down to the Cliffs of Moher Monday morning  I need to be back in Dublin that night however so my student daughter gets back to class.

Question: Suggestions for Galway visit? Is there enough time that afternoon to go to the Kylemore Abbey and the park? What can I stop and see on the way back to Dublin?

I have lived in Australia and remember the left side driving so I am not totally freaked about it   plus I rented an automatic this time.

bmiller,

Welcome to my forum. It sounds like a nice quick visit to see your daughter. Connemara, Kylemore Abbey and Connemara National Park really deserves a whole day. Instead I suggest you stick to your plan to see Galway City and environs. Perhaps when you have more time you can get to Connemara.

What you see on your last day will depend on your route. If you take the N7 & M7 via Limerick to Dublin some digressions might include Rock of Dunamase (near Portlaoise) and Irish National Stud. If you take the route from Galway to Dublin (N6 & N4) you could see Clonmacnoise Monastic Site (south of Athlone) and Belvedere House & Gardens (south of Mullingar).

It all depends on your interests.

Hope you and your daughter have a great time!

Michele

Can I make the suggestion that you drive across to Galway and as Michele suggests call into Clonmacnoise on the way over. Now you don't say when you are travelling but if I assume it is summer and you have daylight until at least 9.00pm then you could head down and see the Cliffs in the evening. Sunday you could drive across to Clifden and return past Kylemore taking the Cong and Athenry route onto the M6. It would make Sunday a full day though.

Thanks for the feedback. Suggestions for Galway on Sunday? Should get to my B&B (Petras) by 1pm.
Place to eat(prefer seafood and local fare)

bmiller,

Galway is pretty compact. You could do a waking tour on your own or join an organized tour. There is also a hopper bus  available and a river cruise .

McDonnagh's  is probably Galway's most famous seafood restaurant. Note that there is a take-out fish and chips bar area and the regular restaurant.

Head out to Salthill for a walk along the promanade beside Galway Bay and a long beach. Perhaps a session in an Irish pub?

If you drop down to the Cliffs in the evening you could call in at either Morans in Kilcolgan, very pretty but in my opinion thinks to much of itself or Paddy Burks in Clarinbridge for your evening food. You will find lots to do in Galway to fill the rest of your time there.

Tony,

I agree about Moran's. Good food but very pricey and they think they are "the cat's meow". Paddy Burke's is much more down-to-earth.

There's a small cottage down by Morans on 1/2 acre of land. I spotted it when I was looking for a project before we moved over in 07. The price on the advert said E750,000 small cottage for renovation on 1/2 acre facing the river, naturally I came to the conclusion that it was a misprint and should have been E75,000 the going rate for similar properties everywhere in Ireland at the time. I was wrong they were working on 1.5 million an acre because of the "location" that was my 1st and last impression of the locality.

Tony,

Wow! I should have jumped on that cottage in Dingle 35 years ago for 500 pounds.
