Hotel Meyrick

Hi!

I need your input again - My travel agent booked Meyrick Hotel for our May travel even though I requested another hotel right at Eyre Square area.   We won't have a car so we want to stay around city center.  I read the recent reviews and saw some pictures of Meyrick and they were more than disappointing.  Can anyone tell me the hotel is really not as bad as what I am seeing?  Cleanliness is at the top of my list when it comes to lodging.  I can't seem to get switched to another hotel and this has been bugging me since we will be spending at least 3 nights there.

caymanno1,

I inspected the hotel several years ago when it was the Great Southern. It had just undergone a complete remodel and was very nice. However, it has new owners now and a name change. I've not been back since so don't know how they are keeping it up. But from the reviews you are reading it seems to have gone downhill. My preference is the Park House Hotel. It is nearby the Meyrick and an excellent city center location.

Is the Meyrick booked as part of a "package deal"? That might be why your travel agent booked it and you might be locked into it. If you booked everything separately and instructed your travel agent as to your wishes and s/he then booked something else, I would be questioning who the agent is working for - you or the hotel? Or perhaps the Meyrick gives a bigger commission?

Thanks for your advice.  I was wondering myself about the booking.  Sorry that I didn't write sooner.  For some reason I was not getting your link in the mail even though I had no problem in the past.

Now I would like to know about what to pack for May/June travel.  I know I should expect rainy weather but do I pack everything (outerwear, shoes) water repellent or water resistant is good enough?  This is all new to me since we almost always get sunny weather  here.  As a matter of fact, we will probably have problem getting heavy duty raingears in local stores.

Thanks again for your help.

Hadn't read this post as I thought it was an offer or review. From what I gather the hotel is running a rolling refurbishment and provided you have an "executive" rather than a "standard" room you should be in the refurbished section I would guess that if you have a "quiet" word to the management by their email you could get a free or reduced rate upgrade to "executive" level. May weather can be variable but it would be unusual to get winter type rain. Just have comfortable, water resistant shoes and a light rain proof jacket and you should be fine. You can if needed get umbrella's and plastic mack's from one of the bargain stores if needed.

Hi!  Tony and Michele,

Many thanks to both of you.  Really appreciate your tips.  Now I feel better about the hotel and not thinking that I got "stuck" with a "shabby looking" room and ruin a vacation I so looking forward to. Ha, ha, ha, I had to look up what a plastic macks is!  Can you please tell me which stores are considered "bargains" in Ireland?  I read that Ireland has a higher living standard than the U.S., I would like to know where to pick up a few daily necessities (bottled water, fruits or just sundries in case if we need to) without breaking the bank.

Thanks.

You are just across the Square (sorry Kennedy Park)  from the Eyre square centre which should provide all your needs.

You can pick up food and snacks at any supermarket. I suggest that when you check in to the hotel you go directly to your room and check it out. If is is shabby or not what you expect go back to the desk and ask for a better room. As I said, several years ago I inspected it and saw many different rooms. They were all fine.

I am prety sure I have covered this before. My advice is that you ensure you have been booked into one of the upgraded "Executive Rooms". I can assure you there are worse places to stay in town.
