Drink the Water?

Probably a silly question, but I'm good at those. Is it safe to drink the water or is bottled water to be preferred?

China is not Ireland, of course, but we avoided drinking any tap water or from water fountains in Beijing like the plague.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Mark

Short Answer  -- It's FINE.

Historically, Ireland has some of the CLEANEST drinking water in the world (and it's QUITE tastey, too!).

In the past few years, a few Municipal systems (Galway comes to mind) have had some minor problems, but they are well monitored and usually quickly corrected.  In those cases, hotels, eateries and B&B operators have made sure to provide info and alternatives for their guests.

There was a problem in County Galway in 2007 and more recently in County Cork but both these cases were well publicised and quickly resolved with very few problems. Irish water is very hard due to the geology of the island and can make familiar things (coffee and tea for example) taste a little odd.

We were in Ballyvaughan in 2009 having dinner at a pub and were strongly advised to not drink the tap water. Maybe this was a temporary situation. I am hopeful the Galway water situation has been resolved.

Mark,

It is mostly safe. The Galway problem is solved now. If there is a problem the people at the lodgings or restaurants will let you know about it. Water tastes different from place to place. I don't really care for Galway or Sligo tap water so I always buy a bottle of water to have in a case like that and smaller bottles for the car. I like Volvic still water.

Many rural places have their own water supplies so Isolated problems may arise due to extremes of weather or local works. After the floods in the Winter of 09 there were problems with ground water getting into some supplies and in drought the mineral concentration can get high. Apart from the problems in Galway 07 the only time I have experienced any problems were when our local Group (600 farms and Houses) was having some new pipelines installed. The water in Galway is now some of the purest in the world and the monitoring system even features in a Microsoft World TV advertisement.

Thanks for the update on Galway water Tony. We'll be there for a week in June and my wife will be spending a few days there in August with her family.
