Trunk space?

Another silly question....

We've rented a "TOYOTA AVENSIS OR SIMILAR" for 5 passengers and luggage. This is the "Intermediate" size car. The little picture shows 2 larger and 2 smaller suitcases. (which really doesn't tell you a thing).

I've been given all kinds of warnings from others to be cautious about the trunk space. We've already decided the lap top and golf clubs are staying. Oh, and the dog. But realistically, what can I expect for trunk space?

Another well meaning friend suggested wheeled duffel bags. Their soft tops/sides are better for closing in tight spaces (trunks). But would our contents not get smashed to bits in cargo? We're 3 females (2 teenagers) and husband. This could be a bit of a challenge. Our trip is 3 1/2 weeks.

Alix,

Here is a link to Toyota Avensis: http://www.toyota-europe.com/cars/new_cars/avensis/index.aspx There are different types. What type you have rented I don't know. Your car company will be able to answer your question.

With 5 people I would be looking at a van or station wagon. Trunks (called boots in Ireland) tend to be very small. I doubt if 5 people will get all their luggage into the Toyota.

We are 4 people but the rental seats 5. I'm not worried about leg room, just luggage space. The difference in price for an "Intermediate" to a van was outrageous.

Alix,

Call your car company. Ask if on arrival the luggage doesn't fit if you can get an upgrade and how much will it be.

We just returned from a 2 week trip to Ireland, of which we needed a rental car for 11 days. We rented with Journey Through Ireland who has a Hertz franchise.  We requested  an intermediate size car for 4 adults and trunk space for 4 - 21"roller bags, and 4 laptop size bags that we used for our personal items.  The bid said: 4-door mid-size; Ford Mondeo or similar.  When we got the car, it was actually an Opel Vectra, 4 door sedan, manual transmission.  All of the above luggage fit into the fully enclosed trunk (boot) comfortably, along with heavy jacket/raincoats, a small soft side cooler, my backpack, and one additional soft side bag that we bought just to carry the gift items we bought along the way.  As for the Toyota, I have seen it listed as a mid-size, but can't be sure it would be the same as a Ford or Opel.  Hope this helps!   Dan

The Avensis is I believe what was the Camrey which is still its USA name. These are what I would call a family sized car and as you are flying over with some restrictions rather than cruising with a couple of trunks each I would be surprised if there was a lack or room for four people and sensible luggage. Having said that I know what Chris packs if we ferry across to the UK??

My brother-in-law has an Avensis. It's sized between the Corolla (US version) and Camry.

Alix,

Good question. I never gave this a thought but I think I'm safe. We are renting a car the same as Dan did and have one less person.

Most tourists have a hard time putting everything in the boot of their rental car. I can't tell you the number of times I have watched people try to fit everything in like a jigsaw puzzle only to take everything out and start over again...several times. First, people take too much with them. Second, the trunks are smaller.

There are launderettes in Ireland. Take enough for a week and have your laundry done.
