Weather in mid to late June?

Hi everyone? I know the weather can fluctuate widely in Ireland but just wondering if I should pack shorts and sandals as well as jeans and sneakers? Or would that just be a waste of space in my suitcase?

Arianna,

I always advise to dress in layers so that you can adjust to whatever the day throws at you. I used to say no to shorts. After two trips in late July which were considered "heatwaves" when I was wishing I had shorts and sandals, I started packing a pair of shorts, tank top and running shoes just in case. They don't take up much space and it is better to be prepared. Of course, I haven't needed them since I started carrying them! biggrin

Arianna, be prepared for anything from rain to a heat wave. I think its a good investment to buy lightweight durable travel clothes...I dont pack jeans because they weigh too much. In july 2006 we were in ireland during a record heat wave...we actually saw an old road (tar?) melting! I have some very lightweight travel clothes from Tilley Endurables...which i bought in 2004...and i am still using them...i like very lightweight capris as they work for hot weather or moderate weather. see tilley endurables website. For ireland a pair of low top hiking shoes is good and a pair of hiking sandals. Dont forget a waterproof breathable raincoat without any inner liner...that way u can dress in layers. You might even like a light weight fleece to wear under your raincoat. I like a lightweight fleece because it weighs so little.

Hi Arianna,

I don't pack jeans, but I wear them constantly. By that I mean I wear them on the plane and on the trip. Jeans are nice because they can be dressed up or down and you can wear them longer without washing.

I pack and wear long sleeve t shirts for layering or wearing on their own if its warm enough. I also bring a fleece for warmth and a rainproof jacket. I am usually cold, so I bring a few layering pieces. If not enough, I just have to buy something there.

I wouldn't bring shorts, even though I was caught in an Irish heat wave in 2009. No warm weather clothes to be found in the stores.

I would skip the sandals. You most likely will be spending time wandering fields, where you have to be careful of sheep doo-doo. I would bring a good pair of lightweight and waterproof hiking boots and another closed toe shoe.

Some people recommend something dressier for dinner, but we never go anyplace where jeans wouldn't do.

Remember whatever you pack, go light!

Have a grand time in Ireland!

3 essentials will be a light weight waterproof jacket, an umbrella (you can get one over here from one of the 2euro stores) and most importantly comfortable driving shoes and unless you have any hiking planned then just sensible walking shoes will do. Find room in your case for a couple of face cloths as well.

Pack for comfort for sure.  Anyplace that I would have to dress up to go into is a place I will be staying clear of!

I find scenery, pubs, and historical sites all seem to accept jeans and pullover jackets and sweaters just fine. biggrin

You are getting some good ideas from others in this post -- you will do fine.
