Hi there,
I'm planning one week 1st trip to Ireland September 8 through the 16th.. 3 of us flying into Dublin with 2 nights at Premier Suites...then we head out of the city. 4 nights to go before flyout of Shannon. Must see's are Kinsale, Dingle and the cliffs of course. Should I spend 2 nights in Killarney or Kenmare? Is Galway too ambitious? it seems the more I read the more confused I get.any help would be appreciated! Oh, we will have a car for the trip.
Michele is away so the Irregulars are filling in for her.
With only four days outside of Dublin, it isn't likely that you will be able to work in all your "must-sees", unfortunately. Galway would definitely be out of the way. I assume that the Fiurth night is the night before you fly out?
I would probably aim for:
Kinsale (1 night)
Killarney (2 nights)
Bunratty (Night before departure)
On your day of travel between Killarney and Bunratty, you could detour to see the cliffs. Dingle will be the only thing you miss. Dingle really needs a few nights of its own to see it properly.
No...say it ain't so cowboycraic! Would it be workable to do 1 night in Kinsale and 2 in Kenmare with a drive to Dingle? Then I would still have 1 night closer to take off? My flight leaves Shannon around 2 pm. Do you like Killarney or Kenmare best? Thanks
Would you rather drop Kinsale? If so you could go right Killarney. It's only a half hour drive father then Dublin to Kinsale and you could see some sights on the way.
Then go to Bunratty, see the castle and folk park, spend the night in Bunratty it is 6 miles from Shannon airport. There is alot of real estate in between what you want to see and not enough time to cover it. You are going to have to give up some thing or change your plans. Sorry!!
thanks frank, Your itinerary sounds do-able. I'll just fear I'll regret missing Kinsale. Everone I speak to says Kinsale, Kinsale....Dingle. It's difficult to imagine the road times based on here in the states, so different. Thanks again
Unfortunately there are many who believe the words of a certain "Travel editor" and head blindly to the places he likes. This means that they have nothing to compare the view through Rose tinted glasses with the other equally if not sometimes more wonderful areas on the remaining 80% of the Island.
I am biased. I admit it. My itinerary would be 2 days Dublin drive over to Galway (calling at Conmacnoise on the way) for 2 days see bits of the Connamara and Burren. Follow the coast down and cross the Shannon Ferry calling into Listowel on the way to (the place I do not speak of) Dingle which is close enough to get the 2pm flight from Shannon. At least you will get to see one of the magnets and have other things to compare the place with. You will also find that good food is not limited to a little fishing town south of Cork. You will see more than you miss no matter where you go and you will be able to tell "Everyone" you speak to what a good time you had in place's they have never been.

Two rules for Ireland, Take your time & bring a sense of humour
Everyone always wants to see everything. But is that really doable or practical? If you had 4 days sightseeing the the USA would you see NY, Disney, the Grand Canyon and Hawaii? Impossible! Pick and choose carefully, know that travel around Ireland is not at warp speed and if you go to less places you will actually be pleased that you saw fewer things up close and personal rather than through the car window as you speed by.
Thanks for setting me straight. I know I can't see it all. Everyone has different favorites so it's difficult to know which would be mine. I wish throw my deal I were able to add a day or two. 4 nights outside Dublin isn't much. Tony, your itinerary sounds good. I may have to rethink.
Kenmare is my favorite small town in Ireland. However, Killarney is slightly better placed as a base especially if you want to do Dingle as a day trip. Killarney is a larger town with more amenities such as shopping, restaurants, a cinema, etc. You can't go wrong with either one.
