A few years ago we stayed at the Oak Wood Arms hotel and had a nice breakfast. Do you know if they sell breakfast to the public? Now that Aer LIngus has stopped serving two meals (no breakfast) we'll need to eat after arriving in Shannon from an overnight flight.
What time do you arrive in Shannon? I was talking to Mary Browne at Bunratty Lodge and she is willing to do breakfast only for those arriving early at Shannon Airport. BTW, her breakfast will beat any hotel around.
Breakfast at Bunratty Lodge is definitely something that would have to be booked in advance since she is doing it as a special favor for early arrivals. Drop her an email: reservations@bunrattylodge.com And tell her I suggested it.
I already sent an email and mentioned that you told me. Given the time difference I will probably hear back tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion Michele- I showed my wife the sample menu and she is impressed.
While MY reference certainly is NOT anywhere near as pedigreed as Michele's, I will add my unequivical endorsment for both Mary Browne and her breakfasts.
(And, her Daughter-in-law, NEXT DOOR, is NO slouch, either! )
I only wish that WE could have scheduled OUR trip to include a stay ...
Hope it works out for you .

Thanks Tony. It is good to know the hours and that the Oakwood Arms will do breakfast for non-residents. I usually find that hotels do buffet style breakfast instead of cooked to order. Although that can vary by hotel. I always prefer a cooked to order breakfast over one that has been sitting under heat lamps or on hot plates.
Now Roy has another choice if Mary is not doing breakfast for non-residents on that particular day.
Thanks Tony. I have an email into Mary and awaiting her response. I checked with Oak Wood Arms and the cost is 10 euro for full breakfast and 6 euro for continental. We stat there in 2006 and it was buffet style. Quite good as I recall.
Michele -- I agree that Kathleen is a wonderful hostess -- and cook!
Roy -- Delta serves a 'breakfast' that is roughly equivalent to Aer Lingus and Continental ...
Sadly, our Arrival time is about 9:30 ... By the time we collect our luggage and car, I expect it will be close to 10:30. That's a BIT late for a breakfast ...
We have a 12:30 Check In time set at Cahir House Hotel and I HOPE to 'Push' that, in order to snag a 2 - 2.5 hour NAP.

Bob- I understand the getting old part, and it's tough enough from Virginia without the extra flight time from Florida! In 2009 I didn't find a place to eat breakfast until Doolin. I get very grouchy when I get hungry- although I'm sure my wife would say that's not the only time.
Good grief Michele! I'm surprised you weren't routed through Moscow.
Mary is booked on 17 June so will not be serving non-residents that day. Looks like Oakwood Arms is leading the choices. If I want to get glared at I could suggest McDonald's to my wife!
If you get stuck there is Mother Hubbards on the road in Kilclogan 10miles south of Galway open from 5.30 am and does a serious breakfast for about E8.50.

To make MY trip this June, I have to leave my house by 9 AM to safely cover the 2 hour drive, drop off the car and catch the shuttle to MCO the requisite 2 hours prior to our 1:34 Departure.
Then, thanks to Delta's schedule change, after the 3 hour flight, we'll 'Chill' in JFK for 5 1/2 hours before departing for SNN, at 10 PM ...
If we arrive on time, it will have been at least 20 Hours since wake up -- and we STILL need to handle the Car Rental Pick Up (and THOROUGH inspection ) ...BEFORE we even begin our drive down to Cahir !!!!
Getting MUCH too old to handle all THAT on what brief, few moments of sleep that I am likely to manage, WEDGED into those fully loaded, 3 + 3 rows of seats.
Would LOVE to fly First Class (at least on the way over) BUT that's too rich, for MY blood. Wouldn't even MIND (too much) those narrow, 2 seat rows on the Aer Lingus Airbus, Delta or Continental's Boeing's -- but you either have to fly into Dublin (or in the case of Aer Lingus -- THIS June, at least) pay about $200 more, Per Ticket!
And doing THAT would mean cutting my trip short by a couple of days --- and I'm NOT yet willing to do THAT!!!!
And, Roy -- If it's ANY consolation --- -- On TWO of our trips when we have brought others, THEIR first Irish cullinary experience in Ireland, was our breakfast stop at the SuperMac in Buttevant !!!!
A rather CRUEL Act, on my part --- in retrospect ????

We have a two hour drive to Arlington the evening of June 15 and staying with friends, leaving our car at their house. They are taking us to Dulles Thursday, June 16. We fly out at 12:30 to Boston and leave on Aer Lingus at 7:30.
When we return at 8:20 PM in Dulles, our friends will be away. We will catch the Washington Flyer bus to the West Falls Church Metro station and take the Metro to Arlington, sleep over, then drive the 2 hour trip home.
Have to figure out how to get my wife to Brooklyn when she goes back to Ireland with her sister in late July and back.
On June 11th, we fly from Tucson to Dallas. In Dallas, we catch our flight to Chicago. In Chicago, we meet up with the rest of the family and fly to Dublin. On our return, it is the same routing in reverse. That is one more plane change than I am usually ready to make. However, it was the best way to go.
We will have to find some kind of decent breakfast for the family once we land in and get out of the Dublin airport.
Well, I'm a little surprised to hear all the complaining from you East coast and midwest folks Try it from the West coast sometime! We usually have a 4:15AM wake up call at a hotel in Portland Oregon, a 4.5 hour flight coast to coast, a 4-5 hour layover, then an all nighter on the plane, followed by an all dayer in Ireland....and it is well over 20 hours. On this last trip, I was still going strong at 9:30PM with NO nap....but was really fading fast! Maybe when I get OLD (in my 60's), I may not be able to do it! And DW has been able to keep up with me just fine, in spite of the fact she doesn't usually get the 4-5 hours of sleep on the trans-Atlantic flight that I do!
Murphy, I can top that. Picture this, 1946, overnight train Chicago to New York. 14 hour trans atlantic flight New York to Shannon on a 4 engine prop. Return trip waiting 9 days at Shannon for a flight to New York. On the way back 2 engines went out, emergency landing in Newfoundland.
Judy wins! I can sort of relate Dan. Last year we spent a week in Portland, flying from Richmond with one stop each way. Add that to the all-nighter and yikes!
I concede.....Judy wins! That was back in the "good old days" right Judy? I hear that tourist actually dressed up in their Sunday best type of clothing just to take an airplane ride! Dan
Lets see, walk to the Park have breakfast (not the best) and then pick up the car. Or pick up the car and go to the Oakwood, or hang on and get to Mother Hubbard's. Depends how hungry you are, you could always grab Coffee and sandwiches at the Atlantic outlet in Arrivals from 6am.

Part depends on the readiness of the car. Last trip, the car wasn't ready so they gave me an upgrade. Only took the larger car because there were three of us. If this happens again, might wait on car instead of taking larger car. The Focus I was upgraded to was a bit of a gas hog. Good part it was banged and scratched up and took some pressure off. Partly depends on my disposition after overnight flight. Tony- do you think the Park Inn is below par from the Oak Wood Arms?
I must be in pretty good shape planning wise when I am dwelling on Day 1 breakfast.
If only I was so prepared to be away from my job for two weeks...
