Donegal to Dublin: sights and suggestions

Greetings,

My wife, three young daughters and I will be driving to Dublin airport after a week in Donegal. I'm looking for suggestions to the following:

1) Sights and routing from Kilcar to Dublin. We will have a day to do this and will likely stick to the M3 (or equivalent) main road. This will be the end of a two week trip (Rome prior), so without sounding too snooty, a diversion would need to be really entertaining for our girls! smile  But I'd be interested in suggestions for sure.

2.) A stopping/overnight spot just outside Dublin. Our flight is at 10:00am the next morning, so I don't want to drive too far that day. I was looking at Kells. (??) I want to avoid a commercial hotel OR a tiny B&B. It'll be our last night in Ireland so something special would be fun. Town and/or property suggestions very welcome!

Many thanks

Mark

It is 4 1/2 hours Dublin to Killybegs and not very exiting.  I would go by the Antrim coast which is a pretty special part of the Island but adds 1 1/2 hours plus the stop at the Giants Causeway and Rope Bridge heading down by Belfast.

If your still reading could I suggest your last night at the Portmarnock Hotel which is a bit special in a great location and easy reach of the Airport.

Mark,

You could consider a visit to Newgrange but would require an early start in order to arrive in time to see it all. Some other options might include Trim Castle, Hill of Tara and/or Malahide Castle.

You will need to be at the airport three hours in advance of your flight. If returning a car more time is required. Staying in Malahide or Portmarnock (as suggested by Tony) might be best since you are not interested in airport hotels.
