Quay House in Clifden, Connemara: Who has stayed here or visited?

Who has stayed at or visited Quay House in Clifden, Connemara area? I know Michele includes it as one of her Quick Picks.

Michele: When you had your look around Quay House, I'm curious about whether you noted any particular rooms that you preferred? If you don't remember the exact room perhaps you recall which section you preferred? They have rooms in the main house and also in a newer annex. My impressions, from everything I have read about Quay House, are that the main house has a lot of history and character, and would be a delightful and unique place to stay...even though the annex would be newer. What did you think?

I don't recall seeing the annex. Perhaps it has been added since I visited Quay House? Each room was so very different from the other, it is hard to think which would be best. They were all quirky and eclectic in a good way. Not your average guesthouse in Ireland.

When I get the opportunity to stay at Quay House I will have a complete review. But there is only so much you can remember when you do a quick walk through.

As of last month, May 2011, there were only 14 rooms, no annex as I recall. Some of them were themed rooms Spent 5 nights, a bit pricey, great breakfast. Don't forget to pet the kitty.

Michele: thanks for your reply. Maybe there is no annex at Quay House if you didn't see one and CCJPO didn't remember one either. I have read delightful descriptions of the unique Quay House in many different sources, so its possible that one of those descriptions was a bit confusing. I thought I read about some newer rooms, though, but maybe they aren't in an "annex". I like the idea of rooms being quirky and eclectic in a good way. Part of the fun of traveling for me is staying in different places, all unique from one another. smile

CCJPO: I love a great breakfast! biggrin Did you have a themed room with a harbor view? Quay House sounds like it has a quiet location and yet is walking distance into Clifden. You had a nice long visit, 5 nights. I hope you enjoyed Clifden, Connemara, and the surrounding area. Was this your first visit? Thanks for sharing.

we had a harbor view w/ a balcony, connemarra, clifden and surrounding are are full of fun, great food, great people, terrific music, both traditional and contempory bands ( Irish rock n roll) great places to get lost trying to find other places. This was our tenth trip since 2002. we were privleged to have 3 extended stays, 2 for 6 months as visiting/exchange lecturers in Dublin and Galway. And one 3 month stint at Queens in Belfast. Now if I could only get my beautiful bride of 23 years to retire, we would purchase a cottage in the hinterlands of Galway, or in N.I. and commute every 6 months from there back to the states. enjoy your trip

CCJPO: Oh how wonderful to have so much time to explore "the hinterlands of Galway"! Tell me, do you know any special hidden gems? We will have 4 nights in Clifden, and part of our stay straddles the Clifden Arts Week. We are interested in Trad music (and all great music), great craic, the wilds of Connemara, Connemara National Park...and the Twelve Bens/Pins. And I'm very curious about Roundstone where the bodhran maker lives and works. My biologist husband is asking me if there are any hikes in the area! Surely there must be lots of places to walk. Is that like asking if there is any Irish in Ireland?

Sounds like you had a nice room with harbor view at Quay House. I think the rooms with balconies are in a newer wing, but like I said, I might be confused, having read so many different descriptions of the Quay House. QUESTION: If you stay at Quay House again, and you wanted to request the best room (whatever you consider the best room)...how would you word your request, what would you ask for? Normally I tend to request a quiet, romantic room with a nice view. But for Quay HOuse I'm pretty sure there is an older original section and some sort of newer rooms. I thought maybe the older original section would have more "personality" but its possible I don't understand the Quay House yet.   

I like Belfast too...my favorite Irish "Nanny" (grandmother) grew up there. I loved walking around the very old Botanic Gardens...which were there when she was young!

I still need to decide how to spend our final 2 nights in Dublin area. We have never actually seen Dublin town. We can either see Dublin, or else see something nearby Dublin such as Newgrange or Wicklow Mountains. 2 nights is only enough time to choose one of the above. But that is a separate question!

I'm sure I've talked with you previously perhaps when I planned our first trip to Ireland for 2006. Your name CCJPO reminds me of CC3PO...from star wars I think? aww

Thanks everybody for all the info on Quay House and Connemara area! I've got to switch gears and work on our upcoming 3-generation family trip to Yosemite. But I'll be back to work on Ireland here soon...as I'm not done pestering you all yet! biggrin
