I thought everyone might enjoy this clip from 1971 that was telecast during the Eurovision Song Contest. I started visiting Ireland just two years later! The violinist in the clip - Joan - still performs at the Corn Barn.
My friend Mary Browne grew up in an Irish dance hall. Her father owned one in Co. Kerry. As a child she used to make dinner and feed all the bands that played at their dance hall in her mother's kitchen. She really knew what went on behind the scenes.
Everyone arrived by bicycle and outside the hall huge stacks of bikes piled up. She marveled that anyone found their own bike after the dance. The dance hall is still there adjacent to her mother's house but is now used as storage. The era of the dance halls in Ireland is a memory from the past.
Thanks again Michele. I enjoyed the Padraig Kennelly Archives and a glimpse at Dunquin in 1968.
After connecting to Youtube I spent an hour looking at the many videos of old Ireland.
The 1934 newsreel is a real treasure. It reminded me of my mother who immigrated in 1927 and would say that the only skill she had when she arrived in the US was, she knew how to thatch a roof. Not a talent she used here.
Glad you are enjoying the old Irish memories. I could certainly browse around YouTube and the Internet for a century looking at everything - to the exclulsion of getting any work done. It is fascinating to see the way things were. Your mother had her own talent. Too bad it was not one that was vital for the USA at that time! She would be in high demand in Ireland now as roof-thatching is a dying art.
