Landing in Dublin very early.

My daughter and I are landing in Dublin at 5 AM after an overnight flight from New York.  This will be my first European trip where I am the "adult", plus I have not been back for about 24 years.  We are picking up a rental car and my thought was to head up to Newgrange.  Our next planned stop is the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher but that is too far to drive the first day we are there.  How far is feasible to go that first day?  Does anyone have a recommendation for where to stop for the night?  Any help is much appreciated.

Roads are a good bit better than they were 24yrs ago and Dublin Airport to Galway is only about 3 hours direct on the New motorways.  Having said that if you are going up to Newgrange first then you could go over by Mullingar and drop into Tullamore with an overnight in Birr.  Heading over to Doolin by Portumna and Gort then over the Burren. That would work out at 3hours plus stops to Birr and a further 2hours across to Doolin and the cliffs. It would though depend on the rest of your itinerary.

I used to live in Cork so the plan is to sightsee our way south with no set schedule. We fly out of Dublin July 26. I want to show her the Cliffs, maybe do a dinner at Bunratty and see the Folk Park, will do Rock of Cashel and Cahir as we drive back to Dublin on Monday. Blarney obviously, and I used to spend summers in Barleycove so plan to take her there and then out to Mizen Head. It sounds like Galway might be doable that first day, especially as we should be able to beat the crowds at Newgrange because we land so early.

Lisa,

Welcome to my forum. Newgrange does not open till 9 am. What are you going to do for three hours before opening time? Had you thought of seeing it at the end of your trip instead and proceeding cross-country on arrival?

Another thought is to drive to Newgrange and take a nap in your car in the parking lot till opening time.

Probably go the nap in the car route. We will be driving up from Cork on Monday 7/25 and stopping at Cashel and Cahir, then flying out Tuesday morning. I figure by the time we get through customs, get to the car, practice in the parking lot a bit and find somewhere for breakfast, it shouldn't be too long a wait.
