So here goes....My wife Kelli and I will be visiting Ireland for the first time in mid August for 9 days from New York (In Shannon - Out Dublin). I think I have the "bones" of our itinerary but would love some feedback in case I'm completely off the rails in places!
Day 1: Arrive Shannon (6am). Torn between staying in Ennis or Doolin. 2 nights in either place. I know Ennis is more centrally located. Seems like Doolin my have more "character" not sure...
Day 3: Dingle: Taking route via ferry. 2 (or 3?) nights here.
Day 5: Kenmare: 2 (or 3?) nights: Thought we would enjoy the ride from Dingle including Killarney Natl park and whatever other place strike our fancy.
Day 6 (or 7) Drive to Cork via scenic route along coast including Kinsale. Here's where I think my plan may be flawed. I was thinking the best thing to do would be drive to Cork and take the train later in the afternoon to Dublin. We could drop the rental car off at Cork airport and taxi over to the train. Won't need the car for the last two days in Dublin.
Hotels/Restaurants etc aren't a problem as there's a wealth of info online as well as Michele's book which I purchased. But really want to make sure my basic itinerary is reasonable. Thanks to all for any input!
Welcome to my forum. Glad you found your way here. As I am counting the days, am I correct that your departure is on Day 9? If it is on Day 10, then you would have an extra day to play with.
I think your 2-night stays in each place is a good strategy. If you do have that extra day add it to Kenmare. I would skip the Cork portion of your trip. The logistics of dropping the car, getting a taxi, taking a train will take too much of the day. Just drive to Dublin Airport and drop the car.
At the start of your trip you are deciding between Doolin and Ennis. Doolin is a very small village next door to the Cliffs of Moher. If you want to be on the edge of the ocean and in the Burren it is a good choice. There are also ferries that go to the Aran Islands from Doolin (subject to weather). Ennis is a larger working town with more amenities such as pubs, restaurants, etc. Its location is not as picturesque. Doolin can be extremely crowded on weekends.
Once you decide on a firm itinerary you would be wise to make your lodging reservations. It is August high season!
