I'm pretty sure that some of the events of the 34th Clifden Arts Week in September 2011 require tickets. There is a partial schedule of events at www.clifdenartsweek.ie . The full schedule isn't on the web-site yet. How do I find out how to obtain tickets??
Has anybody attended the Clifden Arts Week in previous years? I think tony2phones has? Does Clifden get crowded? I imagine the weekends will be the most crowded. I'm curious about whether the people who attend are generally art lovers...or partyers...or who?
My husband and I enjoy music, and I also am interested in the poets and writers who will be featured.
But I haven't been able to find any info about how to buy tickets...or whether I need tickets for every event.
Arts week is frequented by normal people, family groups, old fogies and a few of the 18-30 crowd, the "Party People" are generally over 40 and it can get crowded but there are always quiet spots to be found. Empty shops are set up as Art Galleries, there will be story telling and poetry reading in some bars lunch time or evening and most will be free and sponsored by the local Chamber of Commerce members. So if you are in a pub with music at least buy a drink, although I doubt you fall into the falling over category so just take your time and don't flit from one pub to another. You can hear the kind of music (all kinds of music) before you go in and can sit outside some places to just listen. Events requiring tickets will be advertised before the date (just) and tickets can be bought from an old Burgundy caravan that will be parked on the Square.
Remind me closer to the date and I will pick out some of the sessions I would aim for if they get listed. We usually use the daytimes to day trip, up to Westport, Kylemore Abbey,Leenanne, Roundstone, National Park (Horse riding, sailing, hiking?)
The full list will not make the web site until about the first weekend of the month.
I have messaged you with the Contact number for Marie Walsh in Clifden who will give you information on the Comhaltas sessions she organises in town.
You will need a translator but this club might be worth a visit whilst in Dublin
tony2phones: Thanks so much for all the great info about the Clifden Arts Week! We are looking forward to it. Yes you are right, we are definitely NOT in the category of the falling over drunk people as you put it.. My sensitive tummy can't actually handle more than 1 alcoholic drink or maybe 2 maximum per night...so I sometimes order a nonalcoholic drink...my husband will enjoy a couple beers...maybe 3 beers if he is having an extra good time and doesn't have to drive. We want to hear the music, and meet some interesting folks! Definitely want to see Connemara during the daytime.
I will definitely use a translator to check out the Dublin club that you recommended.
In Ireland (if I may jog your memory) things are more last-minute and not as regimented for things like festivals, sessions, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if Quay House has an "in" for some of the harder to come by tickets. Have you contacted them about it?
Michele: Yes thanks for thinking about that. I did contact Quay House and Julia was very helpful...she says she has a friend on the arts council and she will find out about when tickets will be available. You are right...I have noticed that Ireland is amazingly laid-back and last-minute about scheduling things!
In my family, we say unless you want it done on Mexican time or Irish time, you had best give us a date for when you want it done. Things seem to move with more fluidity when you run on Irish time.
There is a lot of fun to be had during the Arts Week. Part of the fun is in the people watching!
