We are thinking of renting our car from Dan Dooley at Shannon airport. But then we would be dropping off the car in Dublin city center at end of trip at the Dublin city center location of the Dan Dooley car rental agency.
We don't need a car for our last 2 nights in Ireland as we are splurging for a hotel in Dublin city center (the Merrion hotel).
I'm worried about traffic, driving from Clifden to Dublin city center to drop off the car? Is this a bad plan?
We haven't rented the car yet... What about Kemwel? Is Dan Dooley more reliable? We don't want any surprises when we pay for the rental car.
I think that Dooley closed their city center depot. Phone them and ask. I prefer to drop the car at Dublin Airport and either bus or taxi into the city. If you don't want any surprises for the car rental then Dooley is it. Be sure to rent a couple of weeks in advance so they can mail the paperwork to you.
Michele: Dooley's web-site is showing a Dublin city center location, but confusingly the hours are listed as 9:00 to 13:00. Yet they allowed us to have a rental car quote assuming we would return the rental car at the Dublin city center location around 4:00 pm. Perhaps their city center location is still open...we might have to email or call to confirm...maybe you can only rent up until 13:00, but maybe you can drop off cars later than that. Also they have a "meet and greet" offer pertaining to anywhere in the Dublin city center...but perhaps that only relates to picking up a rental car.
However...you did say you prefer to drop off the car at the Dublin airport and take a taxi or bus into the city center. Is this because of the traffic snarls? If you were me, and you were staying in the Dublin city centre, would you still drop off your car at the airport and get a bus or taxi into Dublin city center?
We have 2 nights at the Merrion HOtel in Dublin which includes breakfast and free parking. However we don't need the car in Dublin so why pay for 2 extra days of a rental car...may as well give the car back 2 days earlier.
Thanks irishrover. For some reason our link to Dan Dooly lists a Dublin city center location without giving the address...I can't find the address..and it says 9:00 to 13:00...which is odd because our rental car quote is assuming we will drop off the rental car at 4:00 in the afternoon at the Dublin city center location.
Thanks we will probably have to call or email them to finalize the rental if we decide to rent with Dan Dooly. Sounds like they are the only ones who promise the up front quote will be the same as what you pay in the end without extra charges.
Clifden to Westland Row. Dead easy get the M6 and M4 follow the signs for the City centre and then for Dublin Port, turn right over the river past Customs House then left on the N11 and first right onto Westland Row. 3 1/2 hours two tolls.

tony2phones: Thanks for the directions. Do you know if the Westland Row location for Dan Dooley car rental is called Dublin city center...maybe the confusion is that it's called something else on their web-site....there was Dublin NOrth, Dublin airport, and Port something...
Dan Dooly web-site lists several different locations for rental car offices. We just need to drop off the rental car in Dublin. But we don't understand where all those locations are and which is most convenient.
Our hotel is the Merrion Hotel in Dublin city center. Got a deal for a room in the Garden Wing with breakfast and free parking. But we don't need the free parking because why keep a car 2 extra days when you aren't going to drive it in the city?
Westland Row (Dublin City Centre) 09.00 - 17.30 Mon - Fri 09.00 - 13.00 Sat Only *Later By Prior Arrangement
But, yeah, you should DEFINITELY call Dooley.
Also, FYI --- If you PRE-PAY for the rental, over the phone (at the US office) and pay in $US -- there will be NO 'Foreign Transaction Fees -- which OTHERWISE could add up to as much as 4% EXTRA ....
Wife and I have FREQUENTLY rented Focus class vehicles and they should be PLENTY roomy enough. Agree with Michele, though that cushions/ pillows (maybe a Blow Up?) would be an EXCELLENT idea, given your hip issues ...

Itallian_chauffeur: Thanks for the Dan Dooley car rental info. I'm also interested in hearing your recommendations for the best Dublin experiences...it's our first visit to Dublin and we have 2 nights only. (That is really a separate question...I'll post it early next week as I'm getting ready to go visit my daughter for a couple days. Girls weekend! )
As I suggested in another post use code: dochara for a 10% discount at Dooley. Their phone number is listed here: http://www.dandooley.com/ Get your quote in US dollars online then call their office and see what they can do. You could mention IrelandYes.com to see if any concessions are forthcoming. I am currently working to set up something with them but it hasn't been completed yet.
Michele: My husband called the USA office of Dan Dooley several times with questions. It turns out that the Dublin city center location is closed. There isn't a Dublin city center location any more for Dan Dooley car rentals. However, they will come to our hotel to collect our car, so that we can return the car in Dublin city center. I think you have to be staying in Dublin city center to get this service. (I believe you can also pick up a car in the same manner...you can have Dan Dooley deliver a car to your Dublin city centre hotel.)
I think the Dan Dooley web-site is a bit confusing in regards to understanding this...
The way I interpret this is...you might say there is an invisible car rental office in Dublin City center for Dan Dooley. IF you drive around you won't find it...but in fact they can come to your Dublin city centre hotel and pick up your car for you!!!
That explains why, when we booked our rental car with Dan Dooley on their web-site, it did allow us to select Dublin City Centre as the drop-off location. Then during a follow-up phone call they wanted the name of our Dublin city centre hotel.
