What is CDW? Is it the same as "Collision, fire & theft to Auto" ?

Help! We almost have the process of renting a car for Ireland completed. We have confirmed that our World MC covers car rental insurance for Ireland. They are mailing us written proof.

We have a quote from Dan Dooley. My husband has called their USA office several times. But we are still confused about what exactly is CDW and have we declined it properly?!?

We have a confirmation email from Dan Dooley which states "The rate does not include the fuel or the 3,000 Euro excess liability/deductible insurance, and also the rate does not include collision, fire & theft to auto (CDW), which you have indicated that your World MasterCard will provide. You will need a letter from MasterCard stating that you are covered in Ireland....."

We are frustrated with trying to understand this process. Is CDW actually the same as "collision, fire & theft to auto"? Does that wording sound typical?

It feels like you have to be a lawyer to rent a car for Ireland. confuse

THANK YOU MICHELE AND ALL!!

Saw this on a site ... thought it explained things alright.  Can still be confusing.  I have purchased the super CDW so that no matter what happens, I have nothing else out of pocket .. the peace of mind approach.

Rental Company CDW: This technically isn't "insurance" rather, it's a waiver: the car-rental company waives its right to collect a high deductible from you in the event the car is damaged. CDW covers everything except the undercarriage, roof, tires, and windshield. Each company has its own variation and reduces the deductible, but does not totally eliminate it. Many rental companies have inclusive plans that come with both theft/loss insurance and a more reasonable CDW. In general, it's cheaper to pay for these coverages when you book than when you pick up the car.

I might have answered my own question, but I'd still like to hear from all you experts. I called the MC Assist phone # (again)...and they were helpful. 1-800-MC-ASSIST" They said that the MasterRental insurance with our World MC covers actual physical damage to our rental car only, and it does cover Ireland. It doesn't cover damage to people, nor does it cover liability damage to other vehicles involved in an accident. Also they said physical damage to our rental car would include fire & theft. So that answers the question.

MC Assist (MasterRental department) also said not only should we decline CDW and decline Super CDW when renting a car, but also decline insurance that covers the physical damage of the car no matter what they call it...for example she said some rental car companies offer "LDW" which is Loss Damage Waiver which is actually the same thing as CDW...it has to do with the physical damage of the rental car.

If anybody is reading this and is confused and new to this subject...if you want to rent a car for Ireland, and you want to take advantage of the car rental insurance offered on your World MC...you must decline the insurance offered by the rental car agencies...you must decline CDW and SuperCDW.

Ok I hope I am done with this tangle. disbelief

Melissa,

Yes, you must decline extra insurance from the car company when using your World MasterCard. Car rentals in Ireland include damage to other cars and people.

Hope you are through with the car rental now too.
