Toll Roads - Dan Dooley's vs Hertz

I have read that with Dan Dooley's if you do not pay the tolls you may have fines when you return the reantal car.

I have also read with Hertz that you can pay the tolls when you return the car.

Has anyone had any dealing with either car rental places with paying tolls?

I found a great deal with Hertz that has comparable prices with Dan Dooley's.

I have not rented with Dooley, but did so last March with Hertz.  As I left the Hertz rental counter, I asked the agent about how I should handle the M50 toll.  He said not to worry about it, Hertz would take care of it.  I assumed then,  that it would be a part of our total rental cost.   WRONG!  The toll fee showed up on our credit card statement the next month.  It didn't amount to too much...I don't recall now what that amount was....but needless to say it was much easier to pay the toll bill by credit card one month later, then to have to look for a pay station in Ireland within 24 hours of using the M50.  Hope this helps.  By the way, I had a great experience with Hertz!  (used Journey Through Ireland, prepaid in US $'s, so there was no credit card transaction fee, and a nice 15% discount for prepaying....would use them again in a heartbeat...if the price is right!biggrin)   Dan

Generally

Once you get the Keys for your rental and have the registration number go across to the Paypoint (purple pp sign) and pay before you go out to get your car.  If the hire companies pay the toll after the 24hr period then you will be billed with the toll and a minimum of an extra 3euro late payment fee.  The fee has to be paid within 24 hours.

Hertz

Hertz have registered their veicles for Barrier free tolling (M50 only) and are charged direct rather than the renter having to pay seperately. This saves them the hastle of having to find who to pass the fines on to and earns them a couple of euro everytime one of their cars gets charged

The M50 toll is just another headach for Irish motorists but is fairly easy to handle as there are pay point locations in just about every village and lots of fuel stops.

Jodi,

Many people on the forum have happily rented from Hertz and Dooley. As I always advise, shop around and then take the one with the best total price and terms.

For everything you need to know about the M50 toll go to my Hot News page.

With Dooley you must pay the toll yourself. If you do not they charge you 10 euro, which is a lot more than the 3 euro you can pay yourself. Since most B&Bs have internet access I usually pay the toll online. You can also pay via phone with a toll-free number. Since I am very frugal I always pay the toll myself.

Have to admit that I was a bit nervous about the tolls before I went through the process, but it is blatantly simple to deal with.  Leaving the airport on your trip, you can pay at any number of shops and places along the route, or indeed pay online when you reach your B&B.  Coming back to the airport after you turn your car in, you can pay at a place there in the concourse.

Quite easy -- do not concern yourself.

Thank you. We are not staying at a bnb, we found a cute cottage that I do not think has internet access. But we have alot of options and with such nice people in Ireland I can only imagine that someone will point us in the right direction.

We just pre-paid for our car rental with Dooley's. I am still reeling from the conversion from the American dollar to the Euro. WOW! We're screwed! Our 440 Euro price cost us $630 US Dollars! Not getting off to a good start here. The toll fees are the least of my stresses. Now re-figuring our budget and taking 30% right off the top for the conversion rate(rape). Since I can't change the economic state of our country I guess I'll have to be very thrifty.

Leslie,

Sorry about the sticker shock. Exchange rates have been abysmal lately. Another thing that many people find expensive in Ireland is eating out. So fill up at breakfast, buy snacks, sandwiches, etc. at the supermarket and have either an early bird or pub dinner. Or have a large lunch (half the price of dinner) and snacks for dinner.

Petrol is expensive too but most of the cars get very good mileage.
