Ireland over St. Patricks Day

I just planned a Dublin vacation over St. Patricks Day. I'm staying at the Temple Bar Hotel hoping to be somewhat in the epicenter of what I imagine to be the Marti Gras of Ireland. Does it really get crazy or is it just another day for the Irish?

I would also really like to befriend some locals. Perhaps share a pint or three and listen to stories. Since I'm going by myself I have free reign over my travel decisions; where to go, what to see, when to sleep, etc.

Christopher,

St. Patrick's Day in Dublin is really crazy. You will have no problems being at the center of it all and making new acquaintances. Hope you have fun. If you have the time when you get back let us know just how crazy it all was. We would enjoy hearing about your adventures.

Thanks Michelle. Any words of wisdom or special places to visit other than the obvious Guiness brewery, St. James cathedral, Trinity College, etc.? How about pub / restaurants tucked away and out of sight of tourists? See, I don't want to be a tourist... I want to be a traveler. I don't want to spend a ton of money although I'm aware Dublin isn't cheap. DO I take a day and travel to Belfast? Is it worth the time and money? What about a day trip to Scotland? Again, is it an easy trip or too hard to do in one day?

Also, I plan on taking lots of video and digitals while I'm there. I'm going to try to post my epic on my web site. Rest assured, you and the fine people here will get first word on the tales of my journey.
