Suggestions for Southern Ireland trip

After a year long battle with breast cancer, my wife has just been declared cancer free and she wants to celebrate with a trip to Ireland (she is of Irish heritage but has never been there). We are more interested in the scenic side of Ireland than the big cities so we thought a tour of southern Ireland would be best. We won't have a lot of time (a week or so) and we were hoping to make the trip in late September. I know we would probably see more if we rented a car and drove but due to the short amount of time we have to plan and to actually spend in Ireland, would we be better off hooking up with a tour group or some kind, and if so which one? Thanks for your help.

n8,

Welcome to my forum. What a wonderful way to celebrate your wife's recovery. Long may it last. For an escorted coach tour of Ireland check on CIE Tours. They have many one-week tours to choose from.

Ireland is a pretty easy country to get around on your own. If you decide to do it yourself, we will be here to help. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Michelle, thanks for getting back with me. I looked at some of the tours and everyone I saw included a lot of stuff we aren't interested in and not much of what we are. We are nature people and are more interested in the beautiful scenery than the museums, big cities, shopping, and things like that. It looks like I am going to have to rent a car in order to do what we want. Do you have any idea what a ballpark cost will be to spend a week in Ireland driving around seeing the sights?

n8,

Obviously pre-packaged tours are not for everyone. It seems they don't really meet your needs. So in your case I suggest you do it yourself and drive yourselves around Ireland.

Check my Blog article How Much Does a Trip to Ireland Cost? It will help you estimate.

Michele

A self drive tour will be cheaper than an escorted tour. A lot of the scenery you see on a bus tour involves looking out the window and saying ooh. Some folks will claim that it is so much better to be on a bus because you are higher up and can see more. Ummmm, that becomes Michele's much maligned "green blur tour". It's hard to ask the driver to stop so you can jump out and take a few pictures.

In any case, you will see so much more by doing the driving yourself and you will find plenty of good advice here to help you on your way.
