Is April a good month to go to Ireland?

I am planning a trip next April...as of now I am planning on leaving April 12th and coming home April 26th.  Is this a good time to see the flowers blooming and all the beauty?  Or should I wait further into May?  I am asking because I had a bad experience on a trip the beginning of the year...I picked the wrong time to go and the weather was cold and rainy...just miserable!  Thanks for your help!

Keith,

There is never a guarantee of good weather in Ireland. This year April was great. May was not. This summer has been called one of the coldest in 40 years. Who knows? Maybe next year they will have a heat wave. But generally I find mid-April pretty good. Flowers and trees will be blooming. In May different flowers and trees will be blooming. So any time in April or May you will see spring flowers.

Kieth,

We were there from March 27-April 10 this past spring.  I was pleasantly surprised!  I had expected worse, and was prepared for anything, as we live in the Pacific North West, with identical climate.  It was mostly sunny most days, only 1 blustery day, and scattered showers, usually at night or early morning with clearing to partly cloudy skies for most days.

As for flowers, there was an abundance of yellow...daphodils I think mostly.  Otherwise, not too much for flowers that time of year.  Most of the trees were budding and a few were starting to bloom.  I would think that mid to late April would be ok...based on our experience.  But with weather, you never know!   Dan

Keith,

Mid-April on is when spring flowers fast in Ireland. At the beginning of the month it is just starting. The spring season can also depend on what the winter is like and how much the weather is warming up. Many different things impact the seasons.

The Daffodils and Gorse will be around and yellow in the hedges but there is never any guarantee on the weather.

Thank you all for the comments...I am still trying to decide when to go...I will push it back as far as I can. My husband is a cotton farmer and planting season is around end of april beginning of May so I am trying to work it out! Thanks again!

Keith,

Happy to help. Sounds like your husband has lots of work to accomplish after the vacation. Give him a few days to get over the jet-lag after the trip.

We were there in 2009 - 4/12 thru 4/27. A couple of moist days but only had one cold, wet, rain blowing sideways day. The rest were mild and mostly sunny. We even got an Irish sunburn. The trees were blooming and the gorse was beautiful. We saw beautiful fields of yellow blooming ?crops? Never really found out what they were. We are planning to go again in 2012 - our 25th anniversary is in May so we will probably go near that time again.

The fields of yellow blooming crops were most likely rape seed.

We were there in 2002, April 19-26, and it was lovely. We had one day of all day rain, but most of the other days were bright or misty. About 60 degrees during the day (we spent the week doing day trips from Kilkenny area). Gorse was EVERYWHERE! And beautiful...
