Galway B&B's

Hi again Michelle!

I've been making flight and lodging reservations for our early February trip.  Doolin, Dingle and Bunratty have all been a breeze.   I'm having trouble with Galway.  Due to construction in Eyre square, I'm passing on the hotels near there. Garvey's was $120 per night, not bad, but noisy? Some of the hotels are upwards of $150-$200 per night, so I'm considering B&B's.

My question is the walking distance to town.  The B&B's on College Road or there's one on Whitestrand that appealed to me (Roncalli House-$36 per person, the cheapest quote I got).  Is College Road a shorter walk to the pubs or would Roncalli House be about the same distance? Then I thought about Salthill and using the city buses back and forth........

I'm starting to over analyize all this, but walking in the cold at night after a pint or two, the 1st week in February , does not sound fun.

Can you help?  Thanks very much.

Jane

RE: Galway B&B's

Jane,

I'm glad to hear that you are having success with many of your reservations. I was just in Galway and Eyre Square is all fenced off (has been for a few years now) and they are working on it. However, it will not affect your night's sleep if you stay nearby. The construction only occurs during the daytime. Unless you are planning on sleeping till noon, no problem with construction noise. Have you tried Park House Hotel? It is near Eyre Square though not right on it like the Great Southern. Park House is a lovely hotel and there is a link on my "Lodgings" page. If you are spending two nights or more in any hotel or B&B always inquire about "specials" or lower rates per night. Many hotels have weekend or mid-week specials that are much cheaper.

College Road is closer to downtown Galway than Whitestrand Avenue, which is in Salthill. I took a look at Roncalli's location map and it looks like a 15-20 minute walk into the city. The following map might help: http://optics.nuigalway.ie/images/galwaymap.gif

Taking the bus from Salthill is an option. Taxis are another. I agree that it will most likely be chilly in February.

Let us know how it goes.
