We arrive at Shannon on a Wednesday morning and pick up a rental car. I had thought we could drive to Spiddal for the first night but my husband thinks that is too far and we'd have to negoiate Galway while being very tired and the first day of driving on the left in a while.
We have 3 nights to spend in B&B's before arriving Saturday in Dingle. I'd love to go to Clifden, so was thinking Spiddal overnight, then Clifden, then drive to Kilrush area for the 3rd B&B before taking the ferry in AM and on to Dingle. Is this too much driving? We are 69 and 72 but fit and used to left-side driving and small roads. Is there a village closer to Shannon you'd suggest (and before Galway)? Our very last night will be spent in Bunratty area so want to go further the first night and get closer to Clifden. Your advice will be much appreciated! Julia
Ballyvaughan might be just the place for your first night. You can take in some of Co. Clare including the Cliffs of Moher and the scenic coast. Ballyvaughan is in the Burren so you will see that too. Since you will be just a little south of Galway, you can continue to do Connemara the next day. You could do a loop and spend that night in Galway. Then proceed down south toward Dingle.
Have you considered getting the bus to Galway and staying there for 2 nights, You can get the Bus out to Clifden or a Connamara tour. Take the bus back to the Airport and pick up a car, run over to Loop Head then your B&B in Kilrush.

Just some comments on your first thought about Shannon to Spiddal. We drove the opposite on our last day, Spiddal to Galway. Getting through Galway was not a problem. It was well sign posted and did not seem like a long drive.
True, we were not jet lagged but yet had been concerned about getting through Galway in a timely manner. We are in your same age range and would not hesitate to drive Shannon to Spiddal on the first day.
So if you decide to try the Shannon to Spiddal drive, dont worry, I say go for it.
