Am so appreciative of all your help so far. I am still unsure whether we need interntional driver's licences to drive in Ireland. My husband and I both hold Western Australian Drivers Licences (25 years driving). I sent an email to Ireland Department of Transport asking them, and I got back a cc copy of a memo sent out within their department telling someone to answer me. Lol - 1 week passed, still no reply ??
Also, I have booked a car through Car Hire Ireland (Europ Car) . They charged me 193.09 euro deposit which I have paid. On my bank statement, they have charged me in Australian Dollars. I rang my bank, and they are bewildered by why they did this, there is no international transaction fee charged. I read your blog about money in Ireland Michele, and am now suspicious they have taken advantage of me. I sent them an email 2 days ago, asking for a breakdown of the charges, but they haven't got back to me. Very dissapointed with Irish communication. Hope it isn't always like this
Hi, I drove in Ireland in 2008 and at that time a license from your own country (USA here) was sufficient. I can't imagine rules have changed since then...
I drove in Ireland this year and my New York License was fine. If you didn't request that your bill be in euro's you might be out of luck. I always told them to charge in euro's. Never had a problem.
An International Driver's License is actually a "translation" of your info into other languages. For instance, let's say you are going to Italy. If the Italian police stop you they may not be able to read your license in English and need the Italian translation. So in Italy you need an International Driver's License. Since you will be in an English-speaking country your Australian license will do.
Sounds like the car company does DCC. When you pay for the remainder in Ireland tell them to charge in euros. Maybe put a little post it note on your credit card to remind youself. You can read more about DCC here: http://irelandyes.wordpress.com/2011/07/18/ireland-top-10-money-tips/
