RE: Seventeen nights in June

Sadly me wife has steered me away from the Galway area for Co Cork this year. My sister-in-law who lives in Brooklyn was visiting last week. She commented on the long journey from Co Donegal to Co Cork (nevermind a stop in Longford to see her sister and an overnight in Kilkenny). Hopefully Galway is in the plans for 2013.

Roy,

There is always next time for Galway. Your SIL is right. It is a long haul from Donegal to Cork. Will you be able to break it up?

From Donegal we are staying two nights at my sister-in-laws in Longford. From there, one night in Kilkenny before driving to Youghal.

Not so bad a drive then...My very first trip, we drove from wexford to Rossaveal...yes, in one day with stops, brief though they were...caught the very last ferry over to Inis Mor...and that is where our green blur stopped..we were booked for only that one night...we stayed two...and just adjusted our trip on the fly from there...which came in handy as we had originally booked two nights in at the Bates Motel sort of B&B in Mayo...We didn't feel bad about staying only one night...

Roy,

That will work. Glad you are breaking up the long drive with stops along the way.

When in Youghal be sure to go out to Ardmore for the round tower and ruins and the cliff walk.

We'll be in Co Cork for six nights. I think we have broken the trip from Donegal to Cork up sufficiently.

The first B&B I ever stayed in was just outside Youghal called Blackwater House. It is a private home now.

We love cliff walks Michele! I know some people go to Ireland to wear themselves out packing as much in one day as possible- that's not me. I prefer a somewhat more leisurely approach.

Me too. But everyone has their own travel style. Many people have an attitude that they will sleep when they are dead. They want to pack something into every second of every day. Youth usually cures that!

When I go on vacations  I like to be busy. Usually stay busy 3 out of 4 days. I like to see all I can during daylight hours then kick back and eat, shop and enjoy the evening. I'm probably condition to this by my work scheduled. Up before daylight and to bed after dark. Seeing the sunrise almost every day puts a differant light life.

Trekker Trail Pilots Low Hikers early and usually make a day trip. The B&B breakfasts carry us through the day, usually breaking for tea and scones and skip lunch. I do find a short nap helps me stay up late for the pubs.

Michele,

It is the most peaceful time of the day. It's very therapeutic. But I can see why people would prefer to sleep a little longer. I just love being on a lake or mountain and watch the sunrise.

I find you can often duplicate the experience at sun SET ---

You just need to face the opposite direction!!!   biggrin biggrin biggrin

No wonder you don't see the sun rise if you are up to watch it set!

Bob,

Just goes to show it is all about viewpoint!

Actually, I have seen the sunrise on occasion and even photographed it. But I usually go right back to bed.

In 2007, we made a day trip to Cape Clear Island. We are thinking of a day trip to Sherkin Island this year, maybe stopping in Skibbereen on the way back to have dinner at Annie Mays for dinner. Had some great meals there in 2007.

Roy,

That sounds like fun. Sherkin Island will probably depend on the weather.

Th advantage of staying at a base for six nights, being able to be flexible with day trips.

Roy, I was all set to add my two cents in about leaving your car in Rossaveal (which we did for two nights on Inis Mor with no problems) and now you've changed your plans... ah well, next time! Honestly, in the west of Ireland, I've never felt unsafe for me or my belongings. Occasionally in Dublin I've felt that I was 'watched' while walking on a crowded street. Once my husband claimed someone was casing us (my parents and me) until he gave the guy stink-eye. I am oblivious. It's all so much safer than Miami, where I grew up :)

We'll start with a call in at my brother-in-laws in Co Westmeath, then head to Donegal Town for six nights. e'll then stay with my sister-in-law in Co Longford, before spending a night in Kilkenny on our way to Youghal, Co Cork for six more nights, and end in Adare.
