Ireland with kids

Hi, we are traveling to Ireland, flying into Shannon in August. There will be a 5, 3, and 18 month old with us. Should we bring our car seats with us? Is there anything special you think we should pack for them? Thank!

Jroache,

Welcome to my forum. If your airline checks car seats free and you don't mind lugging them, why not? It will save you money renting them from the car rental company in Ireland. If your kids have special toys (small) or blankies that they cannot do without those would be the things to bring. Ireland has everything else you need. But have enough supplies like diapers (nappies) to tide you over till you can find a supermarket. Don't forget kid-friendly snacks for the plane.

I don't know how much car hire operators charge for car seats but I wouldn't imagine 3 would be cheap ?

There is a Dunnes store in the Sky Court in Shannon town and a range of Supermarkets throughout Ireland for supplies and consumables through your visit.

Jroache,

One thought about the car seat, at least for the 18 month old, would be to bring his/her own car seat from home and use it in flight. We did that flying with a 2 year old and used it on a long domestic flight which worked very well. She was able to sleep comfortably in flight in her own car seat attached to the airline seat belt. You could rent a booster seat in Ireland for the 5 year old and either a car seat or booster for the 3 year old depending on what he/she uses at home.

Since car/booster (cushions) are mandatory in Ireland for children, I would check with the airlines on whether they will allow them in flight or check them free. Also, check the rental price with your car rental company. I believe it is around 40euro each, maybe less with mulitple seats.

Although the water supply is safe in Ireland, if you are in a rural region with the children, I would have a supply of bottled water. I speak from experience with three different children. No water problems with adults.

thanks everyone, do you know if the cars use the same "latch" system? I am bringing the car seat on the plane for the 3 yo, just not sure yet about the 5 yo. I am meeting my husband there and want to travel as light as possible on the plane! Julie

If your Husband is over here does he know anyone you could borrow booster seats from? There are cheap ones available in Supermarkets and Argos which might be a cheaper option than hiring? Yes Child seats are universal fitting as are seatbelts.

Jroache,

I just looked at one car rental company and priced one car seat for a week. It was $53.42. I'm sure prices differ with the various companies. Check on a few and see whether you want to rent, buy or take.
