I am trying to put a budget together both for travel insurance and for overall costs and deciding on options for our trip to Ireland in Sept/Oct. We won't be renting a car and instead taking a train and so we are alotting an extra day for the train travel. I was just wondering if you can help out with the fares and the best way (cheapest) to reserve the tickets, along with when and how to make the reservations for our Sept/Oct timeframe. Details are below:
First, will want to take the train from Dublin to Belfast on a Sunday (sept 30) with a return trip 4 days later.
Second, on the same return trip from Belfast to Dublin we want to head out to Galway. After 4 days or so we are either going to fly out of Shannon or get back to Dublin to flyout. This is part of the reason why we want to cost things out with the train and compare with the cost of flying in and out of two different aiports. How much difference in cost is it to fly in to Dublin and out of Shannon back to USA?
I tried to get on the Enterprise Train site but I guess you can only reserve 28 days in advance.
While it would really help to have additional details, there are a few things you can read to try to answer some of your questions. You have, obviously, seen the Irish Rail web site, but this link lists several options for tickets:
All Irish Rail ticketing info is only valid 28 days ahead. For 'Guesstimate' purposes, you can use choose a corresponding day of the week that falls within the 28 day period to determine an APPROXIMATE rate for individual ticket prices. You can also consider the Tourist Passes, which include Rail travel throughout Northern Ireland AND the Republic ...
Online Prices can run as cheap as 10 Euro per ticket and can be purchased as late as the day before your departure -- but the earlier you buy, the better the choices for travel times.
Irish Rail travel is pleasant, but unremarkable. Trains generally run on time and nearly all of the trains have been replaced with new, Green, state-of-the-art vehicles within the past two-to-three years.

While we can help answer train and bus questions, asking how much a flight costs is - unfortunately - beyond us. If we ran the airlines we could tell you (if we knew where in the US you were flying from and to). But there are many airlines and many fares, which change constantly. I'm afraid you will have to contact the airline of choice for that info.
Hi - we took the train from Dublin to Belfast last May - my records are showing $62 for two one-way tickets. I don't remember a lot of fare options. Prices were cheaper in the UK - our tickets from Edinburgh to London which was twice as long a trip, were $20 each with the cheapest excursion fare.
It was a nice ride to Belfast, I find train travel relaxing. Enjoy!
My mistake. When I read "How much difference in cost is it to fly in to Dublin and out of Shannon back to USA?" I thought you were pricing airfares too.
