There are four of us travelling to Dublin and we would like to go to Glasgow and stay in Scotland for four days this July. Is it worth looking into public transportation from Dublin to Belfast to take the ferry or do we rent a car, leave it at the ferry and rent another car in Scotland? Would it be economical to just fly from Dublin to Glasgow, rent the car there and fly back to Dublin? We will be travelling the rest of the time in Ireland. Just need the four days in Scotland.
Welcome to my forum. Since there are so many variables in such a trip, my best advice is to price out each scenario to see what is cheaper and quicker for you. I have links to ferries and airlines on my Transport page.
Comes down to Baggage. Might sound silly but whilst you can take as much as you can carry Rail and Sail the budget airlines between Ireland and Scotland have strict limits. Of course you could leave the bulk in Dublin but it might cost more to leave bags at Dublin Airport than would be worth the time saving? The thing to consider is that if the Scotland trip is a main feature then can you get everything you want to bring for the whole stay into the baggage allowance of the Island hop carrier.
Edinburgh tends to be the favoured tourist destination so perhaps consider into Glasgow return from Edinburgh.

Thanks for the replies. Still looking at trains, planes and autos. Not easy trying to research online. I appreciate the luggage tip. We take one suitcase, but mine tends to be larger rather than smaller for 15 days.
