Car rental return??

It's only 7 weeks till we will be making our first trip to Ireland.  biggrin

I have been watching car rental rates on Dan Dooley for several months hoping the price would go down, but it hasn't.  Guess it's time to go ahead and book anyway.  I assume the closer it gets to travel time, the more likely rates will go up.  About the only way to save a little $, would be to return our car early--noon or before.  Do you have to stick with the reseravtion time you select when booking?  When would be the best time to return our car?  Our flight leaves @ 7 a.m. on Monday morning from Shannon, so I know we will have to return it sometime on Sunday.  We will be in Cashel on Saturday, traveling to Bunratty for our last night.  We have reservations for the Castle Banquet @ 5:30 on Sunday.  Do you think we will need a car in Bunratty?  We are staying @ Bunratty Manor which I believe is close to castle and park.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.  Thanks!

The car rental cost does not necessarily go up the closer to your date. Phone Dooley to see what they can do for you.

The rental day is a 24 hour day starting from when you pick up the car. If you pick it up at 10 am you need to return it at 10 am or pay for an extra day.

Bunratty Manor is across the street from Bunratty Castle & Folk Park. If you returned your car you could certainly walk to the castle, shopping, restaurants and pubs. If you do so, book your taxi the night before departure since you need an early one.

The Sunday 51 bus from the Airport to Limerick leaves Shannon airport at 10 minutes to the hour.  So droping the car at 20 past 2 would mean you could check in, drop your bags. The driver return the car to the Airport and be back for 1/4 past 3.  This leaves a couple of hours to look round the Folk Park and Castle before the Banquet.

About how long will it take to get to Shannon Airport from Bunratty Manor? Any idea about cost of Taxi?

Ten to 15 minutes to the airport. Probably around 15 to 20 euro.

Hey, I wasn't too far off! I don't take taxis all that much so have to "guestimate".

Thanks again! Don't know what I would do without this website.

Thought of a couple more questions--sorry! Our flight is scheduled to arrive in Shannon at 10:00 a.m. What time would you suggest we schedule our car rental pickup? And, when I book, I should have them charge in Euros, correct?

If you phone the NJ office of Dan Dooley you can pay in US dollars. That will eliminate a foreign transaction fee on your credit card. When you arrive in Ireland you must pay for a tank of gas (petrol). Once in Ireland always pay in euros everywhere.

I would say you can pick up your car at 10:30 or 11. Shannon is pretty quick and efficient.

OK, I will call the NJ office. I remember reading in one of the posts to ask for Attracta. Do you know if she is still there?

Yes, Attracta is still there. However, everyone there is extremely helpful.

Michele,

I did contact the NJ office and book our car rental. Spoke with Doreen and she was very nice. 8 days with excess insurance was $380. I'm happy! Now just have to count down the days.
Thanks again for all of your help!
