Hi all. Last year, my husband and I made our first trip to Ireland. We loved it so much, we are planning on going back this September for 10 days, possibly with friends. The itinerary planning is going well, but we've run into a slight hiccup due to airfare. Are the Cliffs of Moher really worth seeing? We had to skip them and the Aran Islands last year due to inclement weather, but the hubby would like to see them this time around.
Our original plan was to fly into Dublin, see the Northwest, and then drive down and fly out of Shannon. Unless fares drop dramatically, we are now going to fly into and out of Dublin, as we can get non-stop flights and save quite a bit compared to flying out of Shannon. As I am reworking the itinerary, I just don't know if it is worth driving from the Donegal/Sligo area, down to Doolin, and then back over to Dublin. I know the Aran Islands and lower Cliffs boat tour would take a whole day if the weather is nice, and then it would take about 3.5ish hours to get back to Dublin. If we skipped the boat tour, we wouldn't mind driving thru the Burren and then heading over to Dublin. But we'd like to know if the Cliffs are really worth it, especially as we will be stopping to see Slieve League.
Nice to hear that you are returning to Ireland again.
Since you will be in the NW replace the Cliffs of Moher with Slieve League. Those cliffs near Killybegs are higher than the Cliffs of Moher and will be less populated with tourists.
The Cliffs of Moher are worth seeing but not at the cost of messing up your itinerary.
On another note, we're planning on spending 3, possibly 4 days in the Donegal/Sligo area. Should we consider one place to make our base, or one place for 2 days, and then another closer to Sligo for the next 1-2?
It probably depends on what you want to see. Will you be doing a large portion of Donegal? Since it is such a large county it might be better to split things up.
Venture off the main road onto the coast and you will find far better than Moher on the coasts of Donegal, Sligo and Mayo (Try the sea Cliffs of Achill Island)
