My week in Ireland

Hi Michelle,

We are back from our week trip to Ireland.  It was fantastic!  We had three days of beautiful weather- high 50's followed by two not so nice days- rainy, cold and windy and then the week ended in nice weather again.  I was glad that I packed warm sweaters and umbrella's.  The highlight of the trip for me was getting to see where my grandmother was raised in Northern Ireland.  Her property is now owned by her nephew and his wife.  Meeting them was fabulous!  It is an absolutely beautiful spot -11 acres overlooking vast farmlands.  We loved Dublin and the Hop on Hop off bus was great.  We also loved the mountains in Carlingford- great hiking trails.  Kilkenny was also a lot of fun despite the rainy and cold conditions when we were there. Lots of good Irish music in the pubs there.  Loved the Rock of Cashel and the tour guide really knew her stuff.  We also stopped off in Clonmel which had a lot of nice shops and pubs.  The Irish were extremely friendly.  They were always willing to help with directions.  Driving was a bit stressful at times but not as bad as I had anticipated.  We just kept repeating "stay to the left!"

I was able to get many tips from your site that made my trip easier and for that I thank you!!  I can't wait to go back!

Was construction done at the Rock of Cashel?  When I was there last year there was still plenty of things left to complete.

Yes, the Rock of Cashel is still under construction. I think it will be for sometime.  It was still very impressive and I was glad we went to see it.

Restoration The Rock is undergoing restoration.

It began as a 5 year plan but 800 years of rain had made a bigger mess than the initial plan envisaged. Lets face it Construction of the earliest section started about 400AD and fire destroyed part of the final construction in 1495 and the original restoration work was destroyed by Cromwell's forces. The Skully High Cross was the highest of the High Cross's and a year after the Ministry of works began restoration in 1975 it was stuck by lightning taking the top off the cross, this was the last victim of age and nature before the serious work to reclaim the Rock for posterity began in earnest. I claim that visiting the Rock inclusive of the tour is the best 6 Euro any visitor can spend in Ireland.

Sharon,

Welcome back from Ireland. Glad to hear you had a good trip. We were happy to help. What area was the family farm in? Hope you got to see some of the Antrim coast while you were there. Any reports about the places you stayed or restaurants you liked?

Michele

Hi Michelle,

No, we did not get to visit the Antrim Coast as it just didn't fit into our itinerary but we loved Ireland so much we hope to get back there in a few years.  Hopefully I will get to see more of Northern Ireland then.  As far as restaurants/pubs we liked: The King Fisher Restaurant in Carlingford was really good.  I would say that we had our favorite meal there.  We loved the John Dogarty Pub in the temple bar area of Dublin-great music.  In Kilkenny, Kyteler's Inn was our favorite.  Loved the Inn itself- it's so old with so much character -the lower level is like someone's basement.  They had Irish dancers, a poet and storyteller and great music by Raglan Rogues. We purchased their CD and have been listening to it ever since.  It just takes us right back to Kytelers!
