Need answers on bringing prescription drugs into Ireland on vacation. Do we need anything other than the bottle with the prescription , MD name and directions and name of medication
Persons who need to bring medication into Ireland should ensure that they bring sufficient quantities of the medication, together with a letter from their U.S. physician stating that the medication is necessary and is for the patient's own use, together with a copy of the prescription, to avoid being questioned by either U.S. or Irish customs.
No problem with prescription medications. We just keep them in the prescription bottles, in a clear plastic bag, in our carry on luggage.
We did not have a physicians letter nor a copy of the written prescription. We just showed then to the customs agent and never had a problem on either side.
My husband has never been asked to either inspect his prescriptions, for a doctor's note or a prescription list. But it never hurts to have what is necessary just in case the rules change while you are away from home.
Also, bring more than you need. People can and do get stuck when emergencies happen like 9-11 and the Iceland volcano.
We've never had problems with prescription or OTC meds. We keep the Rx's in their labeled bottles, but pack things like multi vits and calcium just in ziplocks. We've never been asked about them...
And please, please, please, don't put them in checked luggage! My dad did that on our trip to Scotland, and his luggage was delayed a couple days - and he really needs his pharmacopia! (he has high blood pressure meds, insulin pills, etc.) My luggage was delayed 5 days on that trip. Luckily I had no meds in it!
