We will be traveling through Ireland in a couple of weeks with our 8 and 11 year old children. We are starting Dublin and working our way North to The Causeway Coast.We will staying one night in Ballycastle, and then heading over to Donegal to visit friends in the Malin Head area for the day.  We will then head south down the coast to making our way to Slieve League Cliffs.  I was wondering if you would recommend breaking up that trip half-way somewhere, and if so, is there a place you would suggest.  I've also read about the Maghera Falls and Beach Caves, Glengesh Pass, and Easarance Falls, but am not sure if these would be spots to stop on our way to SLieve League, and we should plan to spend 2 nights there. ANy suggestions you have would be appreciated!!

Not an expert on Donegal but for the Slieve League you could overnight in Ardara.  How long for would depend on your whole itinerary.

Welcome to my forum. It sounds like a fun trip. When you say you are doing the coast does that mean you will go from Malin south to Letterkenny and then west before getting to Slieve League? If so, the coastline of Donegal can be slow going and if driving any of the peninsulas are involved it will get even slower. As Tony suggested Ardara is a good stop and I would recommend Gort na Mona there. You could also stay closer to the cliffs at Kilcar.

I will throw another sightseeing venue into the mix. Glenveagh Castle, Gardens and Park. Gorgeous.

We got lucky seeing the Maghera Sea Caves ,at low tide during an Irish heat wave (80F).We had to wade thru ankle deep water to see the first cave ,and the water was up to our knees in about 10 minutes.The tide comes in very fast you really need to be aware.

Susan,

That is a good cautionary note. The tide in Ireland does turn very fast and can catch people unaware. If doing something like sea caves, walking across the sand to Coney Island or Abbey Island, etc. it is best to ask locally before doing so. You wouldn't want to get caught by the tide.
