Croagh Patric

We would like to climb Croagh Patrick while we are in Ireland in October.  We aren't planning to hire a car as most of our stops in the Republic and Northern Ireland during our trip will be accessible by public transportation.  Our question is whether or not there is public transportation to Croagh Patrick from Dublin that will still allow enough time to climb out/down the mountain before it gets dark. Or should we get to westport or similar area and stay overnight and start the next day.  The other option is to leave for Croagh Patrick from Cong (while we are staying at Ashford Castle for 4 days).  Which would you suggest?

Any suggestion on climbing the mountain?

thanks

I have climbed it, and would suggest without question that you plan to get to Westport and spend the night first -- especially in October, which is when I was there last year.

As far as public transportation, this is what I saw posted:

If you're relying on public transport for a day-trip to Croagh Patrick, Thursday (the main shopping day in Westport) is the best day to attempt the climb, with three or four buses in each direction; Tuesdays and Saturdays are also possible, but you won't be able to dawdle on the mountain if you're going to make the bus back.

With light an issue at that time of the year, I would not try to pull this off without a fresh start from Westport -- just five miles from there -- in the morning. That being said, you are in for a heck of an experience.  The view is incredible.

There is a nice page on the visitor's center available here.

Have a great time -- it is a interesting vantage point to see the bay and surrounding area.

RE: Croagh Patrick

Dublin and Westport are connected by rail which would be the best way to get across (apart from driving)

If you are driving then there is no harm heading up from Ashford and Cong.  However if you want a night with a bit of life and locals then Westport is a good option. I am sure Michele will have recommendations for accommodation. however St Anthony's or Augusta Lodge may suit

I am now considering renting a car and driving from Dublin to Westport or Murrisk and staying overnight in order to climb Croagh Patrick.  And then using the car to head up to Cong for our stay at Ashford.  So I have 2 questions:

1) where should I rent the car from in Dublin - at the airport or within the city/downtown area

2) Any suggestions for B&B or hotels in Murrisk or Westport that are close to the Reek for the climb for overnight stay

thanks is advance

You can also get a cab from Westport to Croagh Patrick and ring the driver from the visitor centre for pick up.

I would definitely recommend an overnight in Westport.

When I stayed at the Clew Bay Hotel, they offered a free shuttle if you booked two nights with them. Most accommodations in Westport are happy to help guests work out transportation to Croagh Patrick.

I agree with everyone that you need to start your climb fresh in the morning. The trek up the Reek takes hours and days are short in October. Make best use of the daylight with an early start. My lodgings page will give you some options of where to stay.
