Review 12 day intinerary for middle aged man and teenage son like outdoors, hiking, history, theatre

Thank you so much for your feedback to date, and for all the postings that I've been able to search through. I wish that I had found this site (and Michele's book) earlier. I would be grateful if you could review this itinerary and make suggestions for revisions, and also for places to eat or hear good music.

Middle aged man and teenage son are in Ireland for 12 days starting August 14. I like to find a base, then explore and do day trips from base. Interested in the hiking the outdoors, scenery, history, theatre and music. Don't like spending a lot of time driving in cars/buses. What I currently have planned:

Sounds good Tim. For your drive south in Co. Clare, try Loop Head. Hope you have a great trip!

Hi Tim-

I think your plans are great! I really like your time in Dublin (my favorite city).Good choice with Glasnevin And Kavavaghs (Gravediggers).

The 1918 walking tour,is this the tour from the guy at the Sinn Fein bookshop?I have been trying to get to his walking tour, but we are always in Dublin on a Bank Weekend.

The hop on/off bus will be very useful (green one),ticket are good for 2 days.Try to get to Trinity first thing lines get long, and Kilmainham is Amazing.

Have you thought about St.Michan's church to see The Crypts?I think a teen would like this.I think you would get off the hop on/off at The Jameson factory tour stop.

have a great trip!

Susan

Ah yes, I was going to suggest driving south to Kilkee and on to Loop Head. That would be a nice day trip. Stop in Kilkee and take a walk along the cliffs to stretch your legs.

Forgot to mention that on the drive down to Loop Head you will see a sign for the Bridges of Ross. It is actually a sea arch that you can walk over. So be sure to stop off for that. There is lots of hiking along the way.

You might want to catch Kilmainham Gaol early as it can fill up during the day.

This might be of interest: Dublin Greeters.

Cashelmara Lodge is a way out past Galway the far side of Salthill. You could get a bus into Galway and back but if you are having a night in town you may need a taxi back.  Your host should have bus and cab details.  I might be tempted to Stay there Saturday night as well rather than drive to Ballyvaughan from Rossaveal (assuming you are taking the sensible route to Inis Mor)

You will get music in Ballyvaughan so no need to drive to Doolin or Kinvara (better option) for music on Sunday,  (The Harbour Bar in Kinvara does a good Sunday lunch) Again your host should have details of local music without having to abstain.

Thanks all! I feel like I am already experiencing the famed Irish hospitality before I even get to Ireland.
@michele, @susan and @carla. Thanks for the suggestions about Kilkee and Loop Head, and the Bridges of Ross. If we decide to drive, I'll check those out.

@tony2phones -- seems like I will never get the geography of Galway right. I moved from Rusheen Lodge to Cashelmara Lodge to be closer to the theatre, but it sounds like I may not have done myself a huge favor. Oh well -- too late to change that reservation now. Thanks for the suggestion about taking a cab back.

I am not taking the sensible route to Inis Mor -- it is my birthday, and I am planning on doing a big splurge and treating myself and my son to the flight over to the island. I'm guessing it will be very pretty, if I have any luck with the weather. That sound reasonable?

Thanks for the note about the Harbour Bar and Kinvara.

@susan -- the walking tour of Dublin is this one http://www.1916rising.com/ that meets at the International Bar. Don't know anything about it other than the website, and some good reviews on tripadvisor, I think. I'll check out St.Michan's church.

Thanks all, really appreciate the help.

Tim

Cashelmara Lodge is a couple of miles from Galway City in Salthill - about a 10 minute drive (provided there is no traffic). Definitely closer than Rusheen Lodge!

No The sensible way to Inis Mor is from west of Galway sea or air. The daft way is 2 hours bobbing about on a boat the size of a river cruiser from Doolin. You might be further from the theatre but you are closer to the airport compared with central Galway. There are a couple of caves you could hide in on the Burren to dodge showers, Ailwee and Doolin. Up in Moycullen (north west of Galway) there is Celtic Crystal (demo's week days only) Connamara Marble and a Candle works. Take little note of Irish weather forecasts more than an hour into the future or a mile down the road.

Forgot to mention there are guided walks on the Burren from Ballyvaughan on a Sunday. http://www.burrenbeo.com/   http://www.burrenconnect.ie/geopark/walking_maps.html

Which route are you planning from Ballyvaughan to Cashel?

If you knew it was going to be cool and rainy for most of the next 2 weeks, as they are currently predicting http://www.accuweather.com/en/ie/dublin/207931/august-weather/207931, what would you change? Seems like I need some more indoor activities, and less hiking around. Driving in the rain doesn't sound like a lot of fun either.

Thanks,
Tim

@tony2phones, thanks for the suggestions around Galway, and the links to the fabulous websites about hikes in the Burren. Love the encouraging words about the weather forecast.

I haven't yet given any thought to the route to take to Cashel. Suggestions?

Thanks,
Tim

I would probably go south to Limerick and then SE to Tipperary and Cashel.
