I am planning to travel to Ireland in March with my girlfriend and her husband. He is from Kilkenney. So that I am not a burden, I would like to travel a bit by myself but must rely on public transportation. Is this realistic? Is there a service someone can recommend where I can hire a car and driver? I'm a bit nervous about driving on the other side of the road and the expense of car rental is daunting.
The expense of hiring a driver and car would be more daunting.. Public transport and tours are pretty good from the main towns and most tourist places, A lot would depend on the itinerary over all.

Hiring a car and chauffeur can easily cost 300 euro per day and up. Way up. Much more than renting a car. Go to my transport page and look at the bus and train system for Ireland. If you are based in Kilkenny you can get the train to other areas. Killarney is one area with good tourist infrastructure and many day tours available even in March.
Hi Judy, I'll also be in Ireland in March with my mom, and we'll be using public transportation. Mainly the bus routes between Galway, Adare and Shannan. If their buses are anything like their Dublin trains it will be a cinch. And so what if we miss a bus or miss our stop, we'll eventually make it to somewhere. But if you decide on renting a car it can seem daunting at first but well worth it -
