Opionions needed from forum posts- Have tried to pick varied stops, with the exception of our scenic drives, that might take some time to visit. Our itinerary hasn't changed much from our start, so won't re-hash that as we're pretty happy still with our stops. Thanks for any input on too many that are too similiar. The weather will determine wome of the sights such as Glendalough, but we'll deal with that on our drive.
St. Canice's Cathedral and Jerpoint Abbey are two separate places. Kells Priory near Callan is very interesting. Some other things I like (but check on opening times) are Swiss Cottage (Cahir), Muckross Abbey, Torc Waterfall & Ross Castle (Killarney).
I have the Kells Priory on my list, but did note it was in a different direction than Jerpoint Abbey. Will check out the differences between Muckross Abbey and Jerpoint as we will be in Killarney. Don't want to duplicate too much. I didn't put on Ross Castle, as I still haven't research the differences between Kilkenny, Cahir and Ross.
(Wasn't sure where to post this, but I e-mailed Sallyport House for reservations while in "Kenmare" and they require $100 check as deposit and a 21 day cancellation. So, for those of us that are on a self drive, that isn't too practical . But will keep the information as a last minute choice if still available. (Pre-booking our B&B's have become my biggest headache as many of the ones I seem to like are either booked , closed in October or have a three day cancellation policy and with us not knowing exactly how long we'll want to stay, it doesn't seem a good idea. ) So are going with a list of phone numbers for areas we're planning on seeing.) I am trying to book something if we find an extra special place that appeals to both of us, though.
Each place in Ireland has their own cancellation policy. I suppose over the years they have settled on what works for them. Since you are "winging it" you are doing it right by having your list for when you arrive. As for Sallyport, you can just ring their bell or phone them to find out if they have rooms. In Oct I wouldn't be surprised if they have vacancies.
Even if you don't tour Ross Castle go out to look at it and take a photo. A wonderful setting on the lakes of Killarney.
Thanks Michele, I do have the number for Sally house so am hoping to find a room there a day or so ahead once we get to Ireland. Also I did have Ross Castle on my list, as well as the Abbey there in Killarney, but wasn't sure we'd have the time to actual take the tour, as we can't see all, so at least are planning a drive by as you suggested. We would have plenty of time, but are considering adding a day at Bunratty for the Medieval Dinner, so have to cut a day somewhere if we actually decide to make a reservation. I'll have plenty of "to do " items for our next trip to Ireland. Again, appreciate all the feedback.
